Mount Vernon is a town in Findlay County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Mount Vernon was Abram Morse in 1812. He platted the town on land that he had purchased from the Wyandots. The first store and post office were built there in 1813. In 1816, Samuel Morse built a sawmill and gristmill near present-day Mount Vernon Junction to supply his mill towns with needed lumber and other products. By 1840, Mount Vernon had a school and two stores. In 1847, John Gadsden bought all of present-day Findlay County from the Wyandots for $4,000 cash. Gadsden named the county after himself—the name being taken from George Washington's home at Valley Forge (now Valley Forge National Park). Gadsden developed Mount Vernon as an agricultural community with many small farms around what are now its streets and homes. A courthouse was erected soon after Gadsden's purchase; it burned down in 1860 but was rebuilt and used until 1924. The town has always been governed by a Board of Commissioners which includes nine residents elected at large for three-year terms; one member represents each of four wards (north central/southwest), one representative per ward apportioned through representation districts established by law in 1966; recent redistricting has enlarged these districts to eleven wards (central/northwest/southeast) . Many older homes have also been replaced with more modern structures or renovated over time including several high schools (one founded in 1916), a library system, multiple restaurants including Applebees since 1984, local hospital (1930), beauty parlour (1937), golf course designed by Arnold Palmer where Obama played during his presidential campaign(2009) – among others! From early days until annexation by Akron effective January 2nd 1915 when township government took over from Village board under Township charter #1 this kept village form having no say except electing commissioners who met once every 3 years not voted on& issuing decrees without bond money raising taxes fund paying for it etc village people got fed up & organized themselves into Local Improvement Association aka “LIA” formed March 6th 1915(& still does today) formed to improve conditions within theirown limits better informed about developments going on outside their boundaries
