In 1892, local entrepreneur Julius Nygren started manufacturing his own beans. As coffee began to gain popularity throughout America, Nygren grew the company into one of the largest roasting companies in the world. Today, Mount Vernon is home to one of the most famous and well-known roasters in the United States – Nygren’s Coffee.

On July 4, 1795, Mount Vernon's first coffee was roasted. The beans were brought over by a group of soldiers from Fort Stanwix in upstate New York and sold to Colonel Nicholas Trumbull at the fort.

Mount Vernon was a small town in the now-defunct Athens County, Ohio, United States. It was located on the banks of the Olentangy River and consisted of just over a dozen homes and businesses. The community began as a small Presbyterian church in 1827 and quickly grew into a bustling commercial center. In 1837, Mount Vernon became the first town in Athens County to adopt a municipal government. The townsfolk continued to thrive until the early 1800s, when economic decline caused many residents to leave for greener pastures. By 1900, only six remaining inhabitants remained in Mount Vernon. With its dwindling population and few amenities, little progress was made to keep Mount Vernon alive until it was abandoned by its last inhabitant in 2006. The history of Mount Vernon begins with Reverend James Logan who founded the small Presbyterian church there in 1827. The congregation growth came slowly due to lack of land and initial difficulties getting support from other religious groups but Logan persevered through thick competition from other denominations. By 1830, Revkin had secured enough property near present-day Mount Vernon for his congregation to build their own home which they named "Alvarez House." After several years of construction, Reverend James Logan resigned from his position as pastor at Alvarrez House after learning that he would bequeathing most of his assets to charity instead of leaving them behind to help maintain the building - an event which is still celebrated annually by members of the church today. The early days at Alvarez House were difficult for mountvernonians because there were no roads or proper transportation available so goods had to be brought all the way from Cincinnati or Columbus via boat or wagon! Despite these challenges, Revkin's church soon built up a sizable following among local farmers and traders who would come visit him at his home during harvest time or during special services called "Fairs" which attracted large numbers of people! In 1838, while living at Alvarez House with his wife Catherine (née Smith),Revkin met Susannah Richards who later became his second wife and moved back into Alvarez House with him after she got married! Resident Samuel Eaton also lived at Alvarez house during this time although he left shortly afterwards due to differences with Revkin about politics/social issues within society at that time; Eaton believed that democracy should be implemented instead of what he considered corrupt officialism). Eaton's departure encouraged others within Mount Vernon community not too shyly eyeing up opportunities offered by those looking for new blood - this is why many believe that much OF MtVernon'S development happened during Sam Ervin's tenure as Mayor from 1951-1969 than prior mayors combined! It wasn't until 1840 when John Prentice arrived from Indiana Territory seeking wealth & land that things started changing for MtVernonians! Upon arriving in town he immediately set about acquiring any properties possible including 2 lots next door (present day Springdale Drive) which eventually formed part of today's downtown core! Although Prentice did not initially take kindly to having another man living on HIS property (he frequently complained about Revkin constantly coming around asking FOR money!), over time he softened towards Prentice & began helping out local merchants & residents alike!. Over time Prentice even became friends w/ various MtVernon mayors (mm Ervin included!) & helped lead Athenaean civic life (& even served as mayor pro tempore twice!). Eventually Prentice sold all his holdings outside OF town& retired back east where he died some years ago...much like Revkin himself who passed away exactly 120 years ago today!!!
The Mount Vernon area was first settled by the Shawnee in the 17th century. The area became part of the Northwest Territory in 1787, and it was organized as a county in 1803. In 1815, Ohio become a state, and Mount Vernon County was created within it. The population of Mount Vernon grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and development took place on both sides of the river. On one side were businesses that built along what is now Washington Street; on the other were more rural areas that developed around Lake Erie Boulevard. Today, much of Mount Vernon remains agricultural land, with several small villages located within its boundaries.
