The Coast Guard's history in Mount Vernon includes contributing to local economies through its many programs and initiatives, including the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCG) donation of land to support a harbor and commercial fishing industry in 1922; establishment of a maritime security force in 1924; and creation of the USCG Coastal Security Unit in 1969.
Mount Vernon is an unincorporated community in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Area. The community is located on the border of Medina and Summit counties. It lies at the intersection of State Route 9 and US Route 422. As of the 2010 census, Mount Vernon had a population of 527. The name "Mount Vernon" was given to the community by General George Washington during his visit there in 1792. At that time, Washington inspected a military camp called Fort Stanwix and remarked on its beautiful location overlooking Lake Erie. He suggested that the name be changed to "Mount Vernon" in honor of Washington's home town of Georgetown, Maryland (now part of Ottawa). After General George Washington's death in 1799, his widow Martha took over command of Fort Stanwix and continued to use it as her summer home until 1802 when she sold it to John Beresford for $5,000 (). Beresford renamed it "Fort Wayne". After receiving news from France about American victories at Yorktown and Monmouth Junction (in Delaware), he decided to move his army westward into what is now Cuyahoga County after spending months inspecting fortifications along the way. Beresford arrived at Ft Wayne on July 4, 1803 (), but none of his men could get upriver due to rapids caused by the swollen Saginaw River (). It wasn't until December 8, 1803 () when Colonel Jonathan Dennison finally got a force upriver past rapids and founded Mt Carmel Mission on what is now State Route 9 south-west of Ft Wayne (). In 1805(), Lt Col Zenas Chaffee founded Mt Pleasant Mission () southeast of Ft Wayne (); this was followed by Mt Morris Mission () northwest of Toledo (), which became known as Mount Vernon after President James K. Polk donated land for their purpose in 1907 (). Finally, Brownsville Mission () was established east-northeast of Dayton () on February 14, 1903 (), becoming known as Mount Vernon proper (). In 1905–1907 there were also two other missions: one named for Mrs. John Fenton near Defiance (now Defiance Township) in Summit County; another named for Reverend Wm Henson near Lima (Lima Township) in Medina County; both were abandoned within a few years because no new converts came from these areas willing to join them.(6) Today much remains from these early days including several 180 foot high Masonic statues still standing atop prominent hills outside town limits today – most notably those honoring General George Washington (left), Mrs. MarthaWashington (center), Lt Col Zenas Chaffee & Rev Wm Henson (& wife).Also notable are many Federal buildings dating back to this era such as Capts Cooks House & Store @ 202 E Clinton Ave., Gdns Armory @ 715 S Main St., Post Office @ 610 N High St., Washburne House @ 608 N Elmira Rd., etc…..In addition many businesses have been built since then including several churches/temples like First Baptist Church – 210 E High St./Rev Dr J Prince baptizes children 2nd Sunday each month #1110 Walnut Street # Methodist Episcopal Church – 1400 Vinecrest Rd./ Rev Dr P Jackson officiates services Tuesdays 10am-12pm & Wednesdays 6pm-8pm # Presbyterian Church - 1304 Vinecrest Rd./ Pastor B Ladd officiates services Thursdays 8:30am-10am
