The first army gift to Mount Vernon was in 1812, when General James Wilkinson donated a wagon and horses to the American military. The American Revolution had started, and the new United States government needed weapons to protect its citizens. In 1814, President James K. Polk gave Mount Vernon's first cannon to the militia. The cannons were used in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and they remain one of Mount Vernon's most popular tourist attractions today. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Ambrose Burnside ordered Mount Vernon's first artillery piece sent east for use by Union forces. The artillery piece was eventually used in several key battles including Gettysburg. During World War II, Mount Vernon received more gifts from Americans than any other locality in Ohio. In 1947, President Harry S Truman presented Mount Vernon with two Japanese submarines as war gifts. Since then, there have been countless more army gifts given to Mount Vernon by people all over America. The Mount Vernon, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. It was organized in 1863 and mustered into service on September 12, 1863. The regiment fought in the Battle of Gettysburg, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. In 1865, it was reorganized as a cavalry brigade and served in cavalry campaigns against Confederate forces in Virginia and Tennessee. On April 12, 1865, it surrendered at Appomattox Court House with its remaining members.
Mount Vernon, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lucas County. As of 2010, the population was 31,714. It is located in the southeastern corner of the state on the southern margin of Lake Erie, east of Cleveland and just south of Akron. The name comes from Mount Vernon Township in Centre County which was named for George Washington's childhood home on Arlington Heights Road in Fairfax County, Virginia. The first settler was Nicholas Wright who arrived in 1788 and settled near what is now known as Unity Center Mall. The area that would become Mount Vernon was part of the Northwest Territory until it became a part of Indiana during the Compromise Of 1800 following the War for Independence. On January 14, 1802, Washington ordered Marcy Maynard to lay out Mount Vernon Township according to his original surveyor plan with streets running north-south and avenues connecting all points like today's Union Avenue and High Street (now University Avenue). By 1811 there were 21 residents living within one mile (3 km) or less of what became Mount Vernon. In 1814 mounting evidence suggested that Native Americans had been living around this location for at least 10 years before European settlers arrived; Indian trails leading northwest from present-day Columbus crossed over intopresent-day Lucas County about two miles west of present day Mount Vernon on an bluff overlooking Little Miami River. At this point surveys by Major General Lewis Cass led to doubt about whether this bluff could be used as a military post because it lacked cover from possible enemy fire across Little Miami River valley floor below; however when troops under Brigadier General David Hunter pushed forward from Fort Dearborn—a short distance away—the fortified position proved too strong and Cass ordered his men to withdraw instead returning back upriver through present day Lucasville where they found fuel stores available for their return trip downriver rather than risk engaging any hostile Indians again so close to American forces camped at Fort Dearborn On October 3, 1812 Commissioners James Kishwaukee and Ebenezer Chauncey laid out a new township called Spencer Township southeast sideof modern day Mt Vernon between Unity Center Mall & Clearfield Rd.. This new township contained no homesteads but land grants were given out liberally with many people coming here including John Marshall who built "The White House" later becoming President George Washington's private home also referred to as "Mount Vernon". From this date on until 1830 some white Quakers developed plantations here also working off adjacent lands while others lived amongIndians nearby dependant upon game hunting seasons ... Finally after much petitioning by citizens John Fenton obtained title deeds Nov 15th 1830 giving full rights to 99%+[of] unoccupied parcels constituting 4square miles extending along line now First Ave., Third St., Prospect Ave., NW corner Schoolhouse Rd.–Mountvernethit@gmailcom
