The Mount Vernon Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized at Cincinnati, Ohio on November 20, 1861, and mustered in on December 1, 1861. The regiment was originally composed of men from Cincinnati and its surrounding counties. The Mount Vernon Volunteers lost all but four members of its initial force when it concentrated near Lebanon, Kentucky on December 12th due to a severe winter storm. The volunteers were then transported by wagon train to Bowling Green, Kentucky before being embarked for Richmond on January 15th. There they disembarked and marched through downtown Richmond before assembling along Market Street behind the Capitol building where they waited for orders to march into Confederate territory. When orders arrived to march towards Lexington it became apparent that Confederate General Robert Ewell had evacuated his army and retreated north towards Louisville instead. A combined Union/ mounted unit numbering close to two hundred men attacked a small Confederate detachment about three miles northeast of Lexington under the command of Colonel John M. Foster who surrendered after losing three horses and five rifles. This action is generally considered as the first battle fought by the volunteer mountaineers hemmed in between Confederate lines inside of Lexington proper. Aftermath: In total, General Pickett's Brigade lost over sixty-five percent of its strength while only seven members were killed or wounded in this engagement; however these losses may have been more due to combat fatigue than anything else related to military deployment alone...A similar fate befell another brigade commanded by Captain Jno Loyd which operated east of Petersburg; less than a week later Loyd's brigade also deserted with all their equipment when ordered southward against Federal forces supported by artillery fire
