Montgomery, Ohio is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,790 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Montgomery is home to the University of Akron and other high-technology companies. The first settler in Montgomery was James Cook who arrived on July 4, 1814. Cook named his new land "Montgomery." He and his family established a cabin on what is now Green Street in central Montgomery. Cook's son John Prentice founded the city of Akron in 1825 as a trading post between Akron and Cincinnati. The city grew rapidly due to its location and trade opportunities; it had a population of over 100 people by 1830. In 1839, the government granted Montgomery incorporation as a village. The village adopted a constitution and elected its first mayor, John Gwynnett Sr.. In 1849, Congress passed an act granting township status to all settlements within 10 miles (16 km) of Washington City on the Great Lakes region including those within 15 miles (24 km) of Cleveland–Akron–Canton Junction. This Act created township form for most rural areas east of Cincinnati through west of Cleveland except for townships formed from parts or all of villages located within river valleys or along major transportation routes such as the Erie Canal or with strategic positions like Canandaigua Lake National Wildlife Refuge or Niagara Falls National Park

Montgomery, Ohio is a town located in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,858 at the 2010 census. The first settler of Montgomery was John Witherspoon on July 4, 1788. Montgomery was named after General George Washington's headquarters at Monticello in Virginia. It became a borough in 1825 and an incorporated village in 1836. On December 15, 1903, it merged with the neighboring town of Portsmouth to form the new city of Montgomery. The area now known as Montgomery began to be settled by Native Americans about three hundred years ago. One group of this tribe founded what is now Portsmouth Township on the Scioto River about 1800. They also built some early houses hereabouts which can still be seen today and are evidence of pioneer life in that locality during that early period. In 1812 another group from this Tribe moved into present day part of Montgomery and erected a log cabin on the south side of Scioto River near its mouth where it flows into the Monongahela River below present day downtown Monterey Heights. This post office operated from 1812 until 1840 when it was discontinued because no one living within limits claimed responsibility for it The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Montgomery were fur traders who came overland from Canada around 1784-85 under Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Mercer and his party led by George Rogers Clark Sr.. In 1827, it incorporated as a village and in 1830 it became an incorporated town again with a courthouse and jail. In 1907, Montgomery established its own currency system using $1 bills instead of those issued by the United States Treasury Department which had been in use since 1794. The city got its name from General John Montgomery who fought in the American Revolution and later served as President George Washington's military advisor during the War for Independence
