The Montgomery Historical Society sent a gift history letter to the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Dec. 6, 2009, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United States Air ForceDeployed Gift History Program. The program allows USAF spouses and families to send military items and memorabilia to friends or family members stationed in other countries during wartime. Since its inception in 1948, the Deployed Gift History Program has given more than 4 million items and monies to friends and family members who have served our country. Our gratitude goes out to all those who have participated in this cherished tradition.
Montgomery, Ohio is a small town located in the Mahoning Valley of Ohio. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. Montgomery is one of the oldest towns in Mahoning County and has been around since 1827. The first post office in Montgomery was established on December 12, 1827. After several years of growth, the community had a population of 10 residents when it incorporated as a village on May 1, 1839. Montgomery quickly became an important center for agricultural production and commerce during the 1840s and 1850s. It experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location at the convergence of two major railroads: The Erie Canal ran through town and led to large shipments of goods arriving here from Buffalo and other cities across New York State; and another railroad called the Cincinnati & Cleveland Railroad ran through town and served as a transportation artery for grain exports from central Ohio. During World War II, Montgomery played an important role in supporting Allied military forces by providing housing for troops stationed here before they left for battle overseas. In recent decades, however, much of Montgomery's commercial activity has shifted towards services such as retail shopping or dining out rather than manufacturing or agriculture. The downtown area contains a variety of commercial buildings dating back to early 19th century pioneer times including three churches – Stonestreet Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1865), First Baptist Church (founded 1830), and Second Presbyterian Church (1875). Other notable buildings include Community Bank (1924), United States Post Office Administration Building (1926), Ford Motors Manufacturing Company Store building (1928-30), General Electric Company Headquarters Building (1935-37), etc.. Today most businesses in downtown are focused on tourism or services such as architecture tours or event planning - something that has helped keep Montgomery vibrant despite economic decline elsewhere in Mahoning Valley over the last decade or so.
Air Force deployed gift history goes back to the early days of the USAF. The first air force deployment was a cargo plane, Deployed on 9/11/1941st with 1Lt Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin as the pilot and Lt Roy Larsen as co-pilot. This was an important moment in USAF history as it marked the first time American forces were deployments overseas. The Second World War brought about many changes to the USAF, one of which was deploying gifts abroad. In 1945, General Curtis LeMay ordered all Air Forces to deploy Gift Packages Overseas in order to show our international allies that we were there for them when they needed us most. This tradition continues today and has become something special for USAF members who send friends and family abroad on deployments. Some of the most famous gift packages have been sent include those sent to Desert Storm troops in 1991, Operation Neptune's Spear in Afghanistan in 2001, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Each deployment has had its own unique story, and now we can enjoy seeing these same stories repeated again and again around the world!

Montgomery, Ohio was founded in 1814 by James Montgomery and his family. The town grew largely because of its position as the result of a land grant from the United States government. The first settlers were farmers who built their homes along the forks of the Delaware River. Over time, Montgomery became an important transportation center due to its location on U.S. Route 66 and its access to markets in Kentucky,Indiana, and Illinois. In 1948, Montgomery was renamed after Harry S Truman following his victory in the presidential election that year. At times during its history, Montgomery has been known for being one of the most segregated cities in America. However, since industrialization began in earnest in nearby Cincinnati around 1900, race has become less significant a factor in daily life here than it did elsewhere in Ohio Valley towns such as Dayton and Cleveland.
Montgomery was founded in 1795 by George Washington, who named it after General James Montgomery, the commander of American forces during the French and Indian War. The area that now includes Montgomery was part of the Ohio Country until 1792, when it became a part of Kentucky. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson ordered the admission of Ohio into the United States as a result of his efforts to improve trade with Great Britain. The town's growth continued through the years, and in 1821 it became a county seat. In 1827, Montgomery became a state capital.
