The first large-scale commercial production of small batch coffee began in 1853 when four men from Greenville, South Carolina founded the Coffee House Company in Monroe. The Coffee House Company printed its own cups and served its coffee exclusively at their establishment. The company was later merged with another business, the Western National Coffee Company, which led to increased production and more widespread distribution of smallbatch coffee. After World War II, interest in smallbatch coffee diminished as larger businesses became more prevalent in Monroe. However,small-batch cafes continue to operate throughout Monroe today as a way to provide unique experiences for their customers.

Monroe is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Putnam County. The population was 15,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Dayton metropolitan area. Monroe is home to the University of Dayton and its campus in downtown Dayton. The land that now makes up Monroe was first settled by members of The Delaware nation, who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1779. They named their new town after General James Monckton, 2nd Baronet (1723-1792), an English general who fought against France during the American Revolution and later became a statesman in England. Monroe was founded on April 14, 1800, by Major John Bailey between what are now Clinton and Defiance Streets and Market Street in what is now Perry Township; it had a total population of only 10 people. In 1802, Hugh Nibley renamed it Monroeville after James Monroe, then United States Vice President under George Washington. In 1803, when Ohio became a state, Monroe incorporated as a village with a population of 30 people; it adopted its present name on December 11 of that year following successful petitioning by citizens to do so based on their belief that "monroe" represented "a tract or parcels [of land] lying near Cuyahoga Falls." On May 9th 1840 Congressman Joel Pomeroy laid down the cornerstone for what would become Union College (later Wayne State University). This event also marks one point where Masonry Boulevard diverges from main street in town to form an east-west alley which served as college property until 1962 when it reverted back to Main Street (or US Route 421) within town limits – thus becoming one more piece of property owned by Union College itself! On July 12th 1847 local farmer Jno Hickey donated 5 acres (20,000 m²) for use as a public square in honor of his deceased father-in-law Daniel Webster Dennison II – this square still sits today across from post office on North Main Street just off Masonic Boulevard –one such donation which helped make Monroe one of America's most diverse towns due to its location sandwiched between Cleveland and Akron! What followed were many years during which little change occurred other than adding more businesses along busy Masonry Boulevard while Dunmore Avenue remained largely unchanged save for some minor construction projects here and there; however things began to heat up again around 1960 when Union College began offering courses leading to professional degrees inside their own buildings! That same year saw Stonington Square added adjacent to Union Hall taking much-needed retail space away from Main Street – though much has changed since then with development continuing apace along both streets within town limits! However despite all these changes over time many aspects have remained relatively constant including two large shopping malls located just outside town proper: One located east off I-75 next to Ashtabula County Airport while another located west off I-675 adjacent to Interstate 490 just north of Downtown Dayton!
