NAF also hosts a large collection of naval memorabilia that can be donated to the city's community center. Every year since 2009, Monroe has participated in Homecoming Weekend by packing their city hall with navy gift baskets! This event is an opportunity for citizens to come together and celebrate their communities' relationships with the navy through shopping until they drop (or at least that's what we're told). The village was platted in 1837 by Nicholas Monroe and two other men as a trading post on the then-new Erie Canal. In 1840, it became an agricultural center with homes for farmers and their families scattered throughout what are now central, eastern and northwestern parts of town. In 1851–1853, when Clinton Stephenson built a lumber mill in nearby Scioto Township, Monroe began to economically prosper because its river commerce increased with Stephenson's new mill and with access to new transportation routes that improved communications between Dayton and Cincinnati during those years. In 1865, Monroe became county seat of Sandusky County after becoming part of the newly created Cuyahoga County. That year also saw significant growth in downtown Monroe – most notably through construction of its first Masonic temple – thanks to work done by local businessmen John Hickey (the founder of Hickey's grocery store) and Hiram Sibley (the owner/builder of Sibley's Brewery). The city annexed much of southeastern Monroe from central business district in 1907 following incorporation as a city governed by commissioners appointed by Cuyahoga County government rather than elected officials like those who had controlled downtown since before 1800. Today much activity takes place outside downtown including along Third Street near University Circle which has been called "America’s Main Street" due to its extensive commercial development there over time; east side streets such as Elmwood Avenue leading to Wadsworth Heights; rural areas surrounding town on both sides of the Monongahela River; several parks within town limits; four high schools: Central High School (opened in 1936), Stroudsburg Community Academy (opened in 1990), Coventry Hills Community High School (opened in 1992), Valley View Middle School (opened in 2004) – all providing educational opportunities for many people from throughout southwestern Ohio living within easy reach without leaving their own towns or villages either where they live or work each day.

He and his men were traveling south from Yorktown when they came upon a group of Native Americans who offered them shelter. Washington designated Monroe as the site for his headquarters. The town grew quickly, becoming known for its fertile soil and favorable location for trade routes. In 1903, the U.S. government merged Monroe into the larger city of Dayton. However, many residents still maintain their ties to Monroe through its local businesses and cultural attractions. In recent years, Monroe has seen some growth in its economy thanks to new jobs and development projects in the area such as a new high school and community center).
