The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History in Monroe, Ohio began in 1923. It was founded as the Marines Depot at 5th and State Streets. The depot was used to store, process and ship gifts sent by Marines to their families stationed overseas. In 1951, the Marines Depot was moved to its present location on Old Erie Boulevard. The Marine Corps has garrisoned Monroe since 1855. From 1923 until 1971, the Marines Depot gave away a Christmas gift for every 10 Marines deployed overseas. This tradition continued until 1973 when a new policy changed that all Marines would receive one gift per deployment instead of giving away gifts as often as ten. From then on, the Depot only gave away small boxes of tokens instead of large presents. Since 1991, the Marine Corps Deployed Gift History has given back to those who have supported them with a free small box of tokens each year on December 15th - Intl Day of Service for Veterans (DOD). The Department of Defense believes that this gesture represents appreciation for service and helps promote cultural understanding between our two cultures. As part of postwar redevelopment efforts, Monroe underwent several changes including becoming an all-white enclave until it opened up to black residents in 1965; renaming itself after Driscoll Park; and becoming home to several universities (including Monmouth University) until they were relocated elsewhere within Ohio following statewide desegregation efforts beginning in 1970s
