Monroe, Ohio is a small town in the southern part of the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Trumbull County. The population was 2,822 at the 2010 census. Monroe began as a cabin settlement founded by Nicholas Monaghan and his brother John in 1792 on high ground near modern-day Monroe City. The first post office was established in 1801, and the first physician was Dr. Jameson Woods in 1806. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its strategic location as a transportation hub on both the Erie Canal and the Miami River network. It became an important manufacturing center during this time with production including wagon parts, textiles, shoes, buggy parts and cigars. During World War II Monroe produced munitions for Iwo Jima and other battlefields around the world. In 1957 it merged with neighboring Union Township to form Trumbull County government under one governance system for all of Trumbull County students from grades 9 through 12 attendance at local schools across all five townships within Trumbull County were required to attend school in either Monroe or Union Township unless they could find another local school that met their needs
Monroe was founded by George Washington in 1788 and named for him. The city is located on the east side of the Monongahela River and is home to a number of museums, including the Ohio State Museum, which was moved from Columbus in 1912. Monroe also has a small but popular amusement park, The Adventureland.
