Monroe, Ohio is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. Monroe was platted in 1812 by John Monongahela and named for James Monroe, then US President. In 1814, Monroe became the 26th state to be admitted to the Union. The county seat of Coshocton County was moved from its original location in central Monroe to nearby Paulding in 1871 because of railroad construction. The first post office in Monroe opened on October 14, 1812, and served as the seat of Coshocton County until it relocated to Paulding in 1871. The first store in town was built on December 6, 1814 by George Catlin and operated under that name until it closed on February 22nd, 1865. An early school was erected on a grant from Judge Timothy Sweeny and operated until January 1st, 1830. It is thought that one of the earliest churches constructed in this area was Baptist which secondisted meeting house being erected on what is now Main Street near present day Doctor’s Office building which still stands today with some alterations dating back to that time including an addition for a prayer room inside appears likely due to local demand for such accommodations at this time when religion played an important role both socially and politically within many small towns during those days In 1840 Augustus Kelley purchased land comprising what is now part of downtown Monroe from Nicholas Bernsteinthal after he had obtained title to part of what are now known as Second Avenue and Third Streets east thereof from him. He began developing this property into what is today called Kelley Square plat map area which he named after himself while continuing development along Fourth Street between Porter Road (now Interstate 71) and Bellefontaine Avenue westward where he built his mansion later known as “The White House” currently occupied by Bankers Life Insurance Company Headquarters although restoration efforts are ongoing since its demolition several years ago with future plans include restoring access road leading up to said structure as well as interior renovationsjin 2009 while located within museum bounds; originally designed by noted Cleveland architect Alfred Biernheim who also created similar structures associated with Cleveland State University main campus prior thereto . After seeing much success with his endeavors herein running various businesses throughout most of the late 19th century prominent citizens/eventual mayors like Augustus Kelley (1886-1901), Homer Cummings (1920-1925), Edmond Jaffe (1945-1949) etc., helped spur further development taking center stage around city limits becoming home rule following presidential referendum act approved November 3rd 1901 .
