Monroe, Ohio is a small town in the Northwest corner of the state of Ohio. It has a population of around 9,000 people. The United States Army was first stationed in Monroe in 1812 and continued to be stationed there until 1971. The current garrison is the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (2nd Infantry Division) from Fort Hood, Texas. Monroe, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Great Lakes region. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Marion–Springfield, OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Monroe has a rich history dating back to 1795 when it was founded as a trading post on the Miami River by Colonel George Monongahela and James Wilkinson. The area that now makes up Monroe was first settled by Native Americans in pre-historic times. The first European to visit Monroe was French trader Pierre Dorion in 1694. In 1812, General Oliver Otis sold land to John Cranch and his family for $2 million dollars which became known as Otis Land Purchase of 1812. Monroe's economy changed with its opening of the Erie Canal in 1830 which connected Toledo with Buffalo, New York City and Cincinnati, Ohio. This opened up new markets for products from Monroe such as cheese, flour and other goods that were difficult or impossible to get elsewhere. In 1836, General Nicholas Putnam built Fort Putnam on what is now Main Street in downtown Monroe to protect against Indian attacks. He also developed land around Fort Putnam including present day Park Heights Cemetery which still bears his name today. In 1868, President Ulysses S Grant visited Monroe and pronounced it "the best place in America" because of its great location between Lake Erie and the Appalachian Mountains giving it easy access to both trade routes and military resources needed during the American Civil War era. As businesses grew throughout central Ohio due to their connections with this major artery of commerce, people began moving into what is now Monroe from all over central Ohio including workers commuting into Cincinnati via railroads while others moved downriver towards Cleveland or Akron thanks to booming business ventures ashore at Genoa Boatyards & Canals Company (GBC) on Main Street across from Park Heights Cemetery until recently when much land along Eastshore Drive development endeavors have displaced much human remains resulting in some concerns about historicaluma being confused for modernday commercial developments particularly if unmarked graves are disturbed thereby exposing remains not currently protected under state laws either despite GBC’s assurances that no such activities will occur anytime soon; however given that many current residents are descendants or ancestors of those who lived through these years I believe they should be consulted before any decisions are made about future preservation/damage criteria? There have been numerous protests/demonstrations taking place near GBC where demonstrators chant slogans like "No more graves! No more bones!" while holding signs reading "We want our community back!" Prices associated with excavation work which has occurred near GBC over recent years have raised eyebrows among locals wondering why so much money has been spent without considering possible long-term consequences ebbtowards an undeveloped cemetery site only accessible by vehicle traffic going 3 miles west on Route 9A off Interstate 80) A&E Archaeology Consultants LLC hired by GBC appears not to be following city zoning regulations prohibiting excavations within 500 feet of any public building having impact upon cultural heritage
