Monroe was a town in the Ohio Country, United States. It was founded in 1792 by John Monongahela and James K. Polk. In 1814, it became the capital of the Monroe County seat. The population was 8,343 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Monroe County was made on July 4, 1792 when planters from Maryland arrived to grow corn and beans on land that had been granted to them by Governor Edward Braddock. They named their new community after George Washington and his army's retreat from Monticello during the American Revolution. The town developed slowly until 1800 when a sawmill became operational and generated enough money to support a school and other needs. A store opened in 1803 which served as an important link between local citizens and outside traders for goods necessary for agriculture, transportation, trade and commerce along the Great Lakes region. In 1814, Monroe County was created from parts of Wayne County including portions of Sandusky Township (now part of Dayton), Price Township (now part of Wrightstown) and parts of Franklin Township (now part of Athens). At its creation, the county had a population of 10 people per square mile with 7% rural dwellers while 95% were settled within 3 miles or less of downtown Springfield or Lima-on-the-Lake where government functions were conducted as well as major commercial areas like taverns which acted as hubs for social activities such as dances given by Ladies Auxiliary Societies formed around 1830 to provide entertainment for visitors who came through central Ohio looking for pleasure trips downriver or visits by members attending state legislatures then located in Cincinnati or Philadelphia The county seat moved from Priceboro to Quincy in 1820 due to lack of space at Priceboro following construction on nearby Wooster University which began in 1818 Quincy quickly assumed city status becoming one of America's largest cities with over 100 stores operating out side City Hall alone during its peak reached nearly $2 million annually by 1840 however this prosperity stopped soon thereafter because railroad construction increased costs associated with carriage travel distances thus reducing demand for goods transported into cities while simultaneously increasing prices charged merchants for items exported from these distant centers making Quinnipiac economically uncompetitive compared to larger eastern cities Railroad towns such as Cleveland Heights started popping up throughout northeast Ohio during this time period spurred by opportunities available close at hand such as manufacturing plants lining Interstate 75 southeast border with Indiana creating business opportunities not available elsewhere
