Middletown is a city in the Athens-Clarke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Athens-Clarke County. The first European settlers in Middletown were Englishmen who arrived in 1795 and named it after their home village of Middleton, England. In 1811, John Denny founded the town on land he had purchased from the Muskingum River tribe near what is now downtown Middletown. Denny named his town for General James Wilkinson, commander of British forces during the Northwest Indian War (1813–1814). The first store opened in 1816 and by 1830 there were five stores and one hotel in Middletown. At that time, Middletown was an overwhelmingly white community with a population of only 116 people black or African American according to 2000 U.S. Census data; however this number has since increased to over 200 residents as result of its location within close proximity to large black communities such as Cleveland and Cincinnati. In 1840, George Washington Carver moved from neighboring Mayfield to establish Carver's Corners here and it became known as "Carverville." From 1840 through 1870, more than 100 slave households lived in Middletown; however by 1860 all but 10% of its residents were freed men or women born into slavery or who had been bought out by their owners prior to emancipation The last slave household left MiddletOWN on July 1st 1870 when Union troops burned down most of Ebenezer Baptist Church located on Capital Street which also served as the town meeting house
