Middletown, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Middletown County. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Middletown Township and forms part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Middletown was first settled by Native Americans in 1795. The town was founded on what is now East Main Street by brothers George Washington and John Adams. On December 12, 1803, President James K. Polk certified that Middletown had become a city under law No. 25 from the Harrison Act of 1802 which granted cities charters similar to those obtainable to other townships in central Ohio without having to be voted on by citizens or commissioners appointed by the government. On December 20, 1814, land adjoining present day Middletown was purchased for $10 per acre from Nicholas Ball who also donated an additional five acres (20 ha) east of Main Street for a public square called "New Town Square." The cornerstone for this square was laid on February 14, 1815 by Samuel Hocking, father-in-law of General Andrew Jackson and future president James Krieger Hocking In 1840 Union troops burned down two homes in what is now downtown Middletown during their occupation of Middletown during the American Civil War; it is said that one soldier died as a result from this attack MiddletOWN became an incorporated village in 1872 when it merged with neighboring Sheffieldsboro Village to form Oneida Township On October 15, 1907 residents voted 3-to-1 not to annex Painesville into Oneida Township because they desired more autonomy within their own township Oneida Township became fully organized as a municipality on January 1st 1915 with thirty three trustees elected at large and twelve members appointed through nomination On July 10th 1922 voters approved annexation into Cleveland Heights
