Middletown became an important stop on the Underground Railroad because many runaway slaves were brought here from Virginia and other states during the 1830s and 1840s. Slavery ended in Ohio through General William Booth’s Proclamation of 1865 which terminated slavery throughout Great Britain, Ireland and America. Middletown became a permanent military installation after the Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1830 between Great Britain and America. The fortifications at Middletown were completed in 1840 and included a battery capable of firing shot up to 1,000 feet into the air. The fortifications were also used as a training ground for American officers before their deployment into Canada during the War of Independence. The area surrounding Middletown had been invaded by Native Americans numerous times throughout its history and various battles were fought there over control of this land. On November 7, 1794, Indians led by Chief Miami attacked Fort Pitt which resulted in the death of many American soldiers and traders; this event is considered one of the most brutal episodes in American history. In 1800, British forces burned down part of Indian village near present day Uhrichsville after burning down several other villages across what is now southern Cincinnati County; this event is also considered one of America’s first acts against Native Americans. Aftermath left behind extensive damage including numerous homes and livestock lost or killed as well as crops destroyed or looted; this event is also known as Red Jacket’s Expedition. In 1850, violence erupted within Ohio over issue surrounding voting rights for freed slaves; following these events several plantations near Cincinnati began offering bounties for anyone who could provide information leading to their capture or conviction for slave ownership - this event is know as Natchez Burning Rebellion resulting in more than 30 deaths among black residents alone).
