Maga coffee is a Colombian-origin coffee that has been grown in Middletown, Ohio since the early 1800s. The beans are roasted on site and then packaged and sold as espresso, macchiato, or Turkish coffee. Maga coffee is considered a prestige variety of coffee because it is well-known for its strong flavor and rich texture. The first mention of maga coffee was made in 1810 by Antonio Guerrero, an explorer who travelled through what is now Middletown. He noted that the people there used to drink a different type of coffee called "aguacal" which he described as "very bitter and not very sweet." In 1830, John Aiken purchased land near Middletown from the Monongahela Indian Nation and began to grow maga beans. Aiken's son, Edwin Aiken Jr., became known for his involvement in the cafe industry in Middletown. Edwin Aiken Sr.'s wife, Ida Mayfield (1865-1935), also played an important role in the café business. She was president of the National Coffee Association from 1922 until her death in 1935. Eddie Aiken III started buying back old beans from farmers when he opened his first shop at 256 Elm Street in 1951. Middletown is a town in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. Middletown is located in thefindlay-on-the-palm Beach Township on the southern edge of Athens County. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Middletown were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources around present day Unicoi and Athens Counties. When white men first arrived in what is now Middletown they found a virgin forest with no one living in it so they began clearing land for agriculture. They built their homes out of logs and earth until lumber became available to them through canal construction connecting the Great Lakes region to Cleveland via the Erie Canal which was rebuilt after being destroyed by a flood of 1814. In 1819, Moses Park (1763 – 1850) an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of Oneida Nation helped form a company known as "The Delaware Company" which bought 640 acres (248 ha) near present day Middletown from Peter Schuyler for $4 per acre ($/ha). For about two decades Park did all the farming, building roads, draining swamps and planting trees himself while his employees constructed important businesses such as mills, churches and schools in downtown Middletown including one that served as county courthouse from 1824 until 1886 when it moved to Athens County Courthouse. In 1846 he sold his land east of Main Street along US Route 422 to Jotham Cranch (1810 – 1860), father of President Ulysses S. Grant who later donated it to General Electric Co., Incorporated on July 1, 1947; this parcel bounded by Clinton Avenue north, Beaver Creek Road east, State Route 322 south and US Route 422 west forming large part of GE's original factory property today across Clinton Avenue from Ironton College where we stand today!
