The Middletown, Ohio, Army Garrison was established in 1792 and served as the primary military installation for the area until it was disbanded in 1801. The garrison operated a small arsenal and also supplied munitions to the Continental Army during the American Revolution. It is unknown when or why the Middletown Armory was built, but it likely functioned as one of many armories throughout North America from its inception. In 1801, the garrison was re-established as an infantry regiment under command of Brigadier General George Washington. Under his command, Middletown garrison participated in various engagements throughout Northwest Ohio during the War of 1812. In 1814, Washington's army invaded Canada and fought at Yorktown; after their victory at Yorktown, he relinquished command of his army to Major General John Ewing and returned to Middletown. In 1861, shortly after Ohio became a state within the United States of America, troops were called into service during the American Civil War. After being mustered into service on October 12th 1861 under officers from other states such as Kentucky (where they had been conscripted), these men soon discovered that they were not granted free passage through Rhode Island to New York City because that territory had become part of Confederate States of America. Consequently, on November 15th 1861 these men boarded half-tracks traveling eastward across Long Island Sound towards Brooklyn Arsenal on Manhattan's Upper East Side via what is now Park Slope Avenue in Brooklyn Heights neighborhood before arriving at Fort Hamilton on February 22nd 1862 despite attempts by authorities to stop them; this event is known as "the Schleicher Raid". After successfully disembarking their equipment and supplies at Brooklyn Arsenal - where they were met with hostilefire from Union soldiers - members of Company A1st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment proceeded northeast along Flatbush Avenue past Prospect Park up First Street past Yeshiva University before finally reaching Greenpoint Cemetery just south of Coney Island Boulevard - one day shy of their target destination - where they engaged Confederate forces early on February 23rd 1862 while positioned just south of berthing buoy #2 near Gravesend Bayou between Pierrepont Road and Jamaica Bayou; this engagement is known as "the Battle off Gravesend Bayou".
