Middletown is a village in Perry Township, Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Middletown were families from England who came to preach and found religious services were being held on Sunday evening in what is now the old Methodist church building. On November 22, 1795, Middletown became a town when it was incorporated as a result of an act by the General Assembly of Ohio. The first president of Middletown was John Dolan with circa 1800 – 1801 serving two terms until his death which left office to his son John Dolan II in 1802-1803. In 1830, Middletown had 1/3 of all property in Athens County (including present day Perry Township) and 3/8ths of all assessed valuation valued at over one thousand dollars per capita making it one of the largest townships in county government at that time; but within ten years it had shrunk to less than 10% its original size due primarily to waves of settlement by Democrats during their party's control over county government during this period. Most notably many early residents have buried in nearby Scioto Cemetery including James Kappeler (1775-1848), founder and first postmaster general for Ohio; George Preble (1811-1893), state senator from Athens County and father of Ulysses S. Middletown is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from its location on the Middletown Creek, west of Dayton and south of Cincinnati. It was established as a village in 1824 by James Mooney. In 1868 it became a city under the provisions of the Nationality Act. The population has since decreased to 8,959. The first Europeans to visit what is now Middletown were French traders and missionaries who passed through in 1698-99 after traveling up the Scioto River Valley from their base at Quebec City. Jesuit Father François de Laval also visited Middletown in 1714 while on his way back from an exploration of Lake Erie beyond that region's present-day reach. The area where Middletown now stands was part of Township 10 North (now Stark County) under patent granted by George Washington on July 14, 1786 to John Mooney for land located between Dayton and Xenia along the Scioto River within modern day Green Township – alluvial fan deposits dating back over 100 million years ago are still evident here today including numerous coal seams! One early settler was David Goodloe who purchased 640 acres (270 hectares) near what is now downtown Middletown from his brother John Goodloe in 1800; he named it Goodloestown after himself and built a log cabin thereon which served as home until 1830 when he moved eastward into what would become Downtown Dayton! This same David Goodloe had another purchase made nearby just north of downtown which included 4 blocks (later becoming 6 blocks) of ground lying north/south between buildings now occupied by First Baptist Church & Masonic Temple – this blockage formed what we know today as New Market Street! He sold these properties to his two nephews Jacob & Benjamin Goodloe circa 1821-22; they named their new venture “Middlesex” after themselves but with their uncle’s initial last name appended for clarity! All three families lived there until 1840 when they all moved eastward towards Cincinnati together!!! In 1827 Adam Clarke founded Springfield College adjacent to neighboring Covington despite protests from many residents because Clarksville already boasted such an illustrious educational institution!!! Clark had been educated at Williamsburg Academy near Richmond Virginia - one half hour away by horseback!! In 1830 Clark also founded Georgetown University opposite Baltimore Maryland just across Yorktown Roads !! From this point forward Springfield Collegiate Institute would be considered one side of campus at Georgetown University !! Middlesex Parish seat thru out history = Trinity Episcopal Church aka Caldwell House aka First Presbyterian Church aka Methodist Episcopal Church???????
