Middleburg Heights is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. The first coffee houses in Middleburg Heights were established by Nicholas Scudder and his brother John Scudder in 1824 as a result of their successful business dealings with local farmers. Coffee became an important part of the community's economy and was brought to Middleburg Heights by early Italian immigrants who operated roasting mills along the river. In 1892, J. P. O'Neill established Price's Coffee House which remains one of the most popular cafes in town today. Price's was originally built as a tavern and its original floor plan featured an open-air dining area flanked by two stories of shops and services on each side. During prohibition, Price's became one of the first businesses to break ranks and refuse service to convicted criminals or anyone under 21 years old. Today, Price's still features prominently in local history as one of the few remaining buildings from that era that still stands unaltered within Middleburg Heights boundaries. In 1916, local businessmen George Fenton and John Hildebrandt opened The Owl for their own personal enjoyment rather than selling coffee direct to consumers like other businesses at that time. Middleburg Heights, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Middleburg Heights is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was platted onland between 1825 and 1830 by Nicholas Wright and his brother James Wright as a result of an agreement made between them after they sold land to build a canal. The village of Middleburg Heights was established in 1894 when the section of town east of Main Street was annexed by Middleburg Heights. The name “Middleburg” is derived from two local place names which were both once part of the Mentor Township that straddled what is now Euclid Avenue and Green Lane in the modern day city limits of Cleveland. According to one account, one settler named Mr. Middleburgh built a log cabin on what is now Old No. 4 Road near where present-day State Route 8 intersects I-480 about eighteen miles south-southwest of Cleveland while others claim he used some logs salvaged from building a canal across Sandusky Bay to build his home here at around the same time as well as another log cabin which still stands today on Third Street just north of Brown Drive (now home to Irvington Elementary School). In 1825 Nicholas Wright purchased 160 acres (61 hectares) northwest of where Middleburg Heights now stands from John Stephenson for $120 +$10 per acre ($/acre). This grant allowed him to develop this area into what would become known as "Middleburg Heights." In 1830 James Wright also acquired 160 acres (61 hectares) northwest of Middleborough Heights for $100 +$10 per acre ($/acre). In these grants William Moulton took care not only to name but also plat this area "Middleburgh" after Nicholas's father who had died previous year and left behind lands in Mentor Township including much that presently forms Euclid Avenue within our borders - thus ensuring that namesake's heirs would receive title too! While it may have been more practical for William Moulton simply to call all this area "Middleburgh," it nevertheless honorsNicholaswright & James Wright's original purchase agreement whereby each individual contributed their own piece towards developing said community site - something many residents still take pride in today! It wasn't until 1892 when village status was granted by the state legislature via Act 180 that 'Village' could be applied to any township or rural municipality within Cuyahoga County with over 2,500 residents - thus granting Village status for Middlebury Heights! As such, democracy did finally reach our doorstep...albeit somewhat reluctantly given its infancy back then! During prohibition years many citizens chose insteadtoaunder alcohol rather than paying taxes headlong into government coffers thereby risking arrest or worse should substances like alcohol become illegal again...a decision which unfortunately has paid handsomely off over recent years so THANK YOU FOR CHOOSING TO CONTINUE USING LEGAL ACIDIC WATER FOLKS IN MIDDLEBURGH HEIGHTS!!! To date there have yet been any reported incidents involving law enforcement related thereto...an outcome we're very pleased with considering how things have changed since then! The post- prohibition era saw an influxof refugees following World War II who found work opportunities available thanks largely to newly opened manufacturing plants in southern Ohio thanks to President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal policies! Many enterprising individuals decidedto remaininOhio despite difficult times during those years due chieflyto lackof affordable housing; however newcomersquickly assimilated into society here unlike during earlier eras when newcomerswere either forcibly removed or assimilated without proper opportunity or choice!!
