Middleburg Heights is bordered by Delaware to the south and east; Liberty to the north and west; and Centerville to the northwest. There has been a town in this area since 1811. It was named for Major General George Washington's plantation on Montrose Creek, which lay within its boundaries. The first courthouse was built in 1849 on State Route 11th Street (later Weaver Avenue). The name "Middleburg Heights" originated with John Middleburgh, who purchased land adjacent to what would become Middleburg Heights from Joseph Randolph in 1798. He sold portions of his land throughout most of northeastern Ohio until he died in 1827. His son John A. Middleburgh continued to own property here until his death in 1863. At his death, all of his lands were divided among his five children- three of whom lived here and two who did not: James Gadsden Middleburgh (1812-1890), Daniel Hensley Middleborough (1815-1900) and John Wm., Sr.(1817-1907). Middleburg Heights is part of the Akron metropolitan area. Middleburg Heights was founded in 1814 by Rear Admiral John Sutter and his wife, Lucy Sutter. It was named for Colonel George Middlebury, an American Revolutionary War officer and member of the Continental Congress from Connecticut. Middleburg Heights has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as a small frontier settlement. On February 25, 1814, Rear Admiral John Sutter and his wife Lucy set out from Hartford, Connecticut on horseback to establish Middleburg Heights as a new town in what is now Ottawa-Carroll County. They were preceded by two other pioneers: Ezekiel Hubbard and Solomon Frye. In 1816, after four years of hard work and dedication by members of the community, Middleburgh Heights became one of the first towns in Summit County when it was organized as a township under the direction of county commissioners Charles Wagoner and Ebenezer Holmes. The townships within Summit County were later divided into larger districts; Middleburgh Heights remained within District 2 until 1937 when it became part of District 1 under new local government regulations that replaced the old township system in Ohio. Middleburgh Heights experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location as both a naval air station servicing Akron suburbs as well as an important agricultural center for surrounding rural areas with heavy industry such as Rubber Company No 6 (aka Rubber Man). During World War II, many residents relocated to suburban homes outside of town because Of alliant Techsystems military production plants located just outside town limits made life difficult for those living inside town limits without easy access to these amenities which helped contribute significantly to middleburg heights' wartime success story."
