Middleburg Heights is a community in the Athens-Clarke County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Middleburg Heights is located on the west side of Interstate 75 and east of I-71. The first settlers to what became Middleburg Heights were James Fenton and his family who arrived from England in 1792. They did not stay long however, as they soon moved away and founded a nearby settlement called Derby on the Scioto River. In 1814, John Hoadley settled in what would become Middleburg Heights after purchasing land from James Fenton. He built a log cabin which he named "Hoadley's Grove". In 1836, Drury & Company built a gristmill on High Street which served as village hall until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. The mill building still stands and can be seen from I-75 southbound just past milepost 506 (exit 190). In 1839, Congress passed an act that provided for township formation within Athens County; this Act created 5 townships: Delaware Township (northwest), Harrison Township (east), Liberty Township (southwest), Perry Township (south), and Union Township (west). On November 3rd of that year, Union Township was formed with territory from Perry Township and Harrison Township. The first settler to live in Union Township was Dora Bogan who arrived in 1840. After some time she married Jacob Green whom she met while working for her sister Esther Green at their father's farm near Newarkville. When Dora died childless in 1865, her husband took over her estate and continued to live there until his death in 1886; he is buried at Maple Lawn Cemetery adjacent to his wife's remains.) Middleburg Heights remained mostly rural until World War II when many businesses opened up including three small factories: Wernher Kappel & Co., Kuhn Rubber Co., and United Cigar Manufacturing Co..
