Miamisburg is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in the Muskingum County seat of Lima. The population was 8,871 at the 2010 census. It was founded by General George Washington and his family on July 4, 1793 as part of the Northwest Territory. Miamisburg became an incorporated town in 1847. The present-day downtown area was built chiefly during the late 19th century when railroads arrived in Miamisburg and other nearby towns. The town is named after Anthony Wayne, an early settler who platted what is now Miamisburg on land that he had purchased from the Shawnee Indian Nation in 1789. In 1812, General David Blanchard gave $5 for every house built to be turned into a schoolhouse and also contributed land for a church and cemetery. By 1830, there were twenty-one schools in Miamisburg with more than 1,000 students taught by ninety-six teachers. In 1847, one year after Ohio became a state, Congress passed An Act to incorporate certain towns within said state into counties which then had power to build jails and other public works not inconsistent with their municipal duties; but it did not include Miamisberg because it lay wholly within Muskingum County (then under law to be divided among three congressional districts). On October 10 of that year additional votes were taken by referendum at various locations throughout the Northwest Territory setting apart parts of Toledo Township as Athens Township (now part of Lima), Reynolds Township (now part of Warren) and Stillwater Township (now part of Delaware). Consequently Anthony Wayne's original plat was reissued as follows: "East side thereof bounded by Clinton Avenue on the northwest; West side by State Road No 2 leading south from Lima; North side by State Road No 3 leading east from Clinton". This new plat included what is now downtown Miamisburgh along Clinton Avenue between State Road Number 2 and Third Street Southeast while still including portions of Athens Township east of Third Street Northeast including what are now parts of Terrytown HeightsNeighborhood while still leaving all other territory unincorporated until organized again as an incorporated village on November 7th1887 with Anthony Wayne living alone until his death thirty years later on May 9th 1888."
