Miamisburg is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in Stark County. The population was 3,912 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Stark County and home to the Miamisburg Municipal Airport. The first permanent settler in what would become Miamisburg was Joshua Henschel, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Hamburg, Germany. In 1814, David Hegarty built a cabin on the site of present-day Hegarty's Store and Post Office and named it after his wife's family name, Mahoning Valley (now Mahoning County). In 1821, John Cushing founded Cushing National Laboratory here as part of Ohio State University and named it for his son John Quincy Cushman. The lab became one of America's most important scientific institutions during World War I due to its research into gas warfare and explosives. Following World War II, Miamisburg experienced rapid growth as a result of new industrial development within the city limits – beginning with automotive manufacturing giant Ford Motor Company’s opening of its new plant in 1938 that produced more than 1 million vehicles annually – but also because of changes wrought by demographic growth such as increasing numbers of Hispanics living near downtown Miamisburg; an expanding agricultural sector; and suburbanization throughout Stark County over the next few decades. As recently as 1990, about two-thirds of all residents identified themselves as white Protestant; today that figure has slipped below 50%.
