Miamisburg is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,590 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Potawatomi word "mikisauga" meaning "in the middle." Miamisburg began as a small village on the Scioto River in 1810. It grew to become one of the most important cities inarea with its railroads and manufacturing plants. In 1916, Miamisburg became incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of the largest municipalities in Mahoning County. The city's economy depends heavily upon agriculture, including corn farming and soybean production; it also manufactures items such as plastic water containers and air conditioners. The history of Miamisburg can be traced back to 1810 when James Mooney founded what would eventually become Miamisburg on the Scioto River near present-day Scio Township. At first, Mooney built his cabin using logs that he brought over from Ireland. By 1812, Mooney had constructed a log courthouse and jail which functioned until 1815 when justice was dispensed through law courts established by government officials rather than tribal judges who could not render legal opinions without bias or conflict of interest. In 1817, Captain John Forbes moved his family from Lancaster County to what is now Miamisburg after losing land due to Indian hostilities during the Northwest Indian War (1813-1816). In 1820, David Fenton acquired an acreage with Wabash Railroad rights adjacent to where today's Third Street meets Independence Avenue east of downtown Miamisburg. On November 15th 1830 David Fenton married Anna Maria Haggerty widow of Nicholas Haggerty at Spring Grove Methodist Episcopal Church located on current day Fourth Street corner Main Street in what is now part of downtown Miamisburgh Discussed here were some conditions surrounding purchase guarantee deed dated November 15 1830 for lot next door containing 6 rods 8 feet by 4 feet extending along both sides called lots 16-1/2 acres Lot no 1 containing 30 rods 10 feet by 20 feet bounded northerly by Second street on each side westerly by Third street on each sideoutherly by First street . . .AnnaMariaFenton & David Fenton conveyed their interests therein to Joseph Cramer Esquire . . .Joseph Cramer sold lot 16-1/2 acres for $100 cash plus 2% ($4) per yeartil life Stated herein being term beginning January 1st 1840 conditioned upon paymentment thereof @ $6 per week with interest compounded monthly rate then said sum annually increasing at 5% above cost until paidoff ....It should be noted that this document shows that AnnaMariaFenton owned 50% share in newly purchased parcel while her husband David retained 25%. This means that they held title jointly until partition occurred some time after 1840 when AnnaMariaFenton lost her share (50%). A few years later another group interested in purchasing land downriver from where they lived gathered together £100 worth of goods including furniture, tools and other farm supplies for building their own home before traveling upriver nominated three men - George Stephenson(owner boatbuilders), Isaac Norris(a Quaker builder)and Ebenezer Farnsworth(director general post office)to organize a company under pseudonyms - Febrero Land Company No 1 February 1733 3 Men only subscribed agreeing never again to sell any property without written consent from subscribers signed receipt appointed directors George Stephenson Isaac Norris Ebenezer Farnsworth These gentlemen organized themselves into companies known as Febrero Land Company No 2 March 1733 10 Men subscribed agreeing never again to sell any property without written consent from subscribing DirectorsGeorge Stephenson Isaac Norris Ebenezer Farnsworth these gentlemen organized themselves into companies known as Febrero Land Company No 3 April 1734 12 Men subscribe agreeing never again to sell any property without written consent from subscribing DirectorsGeorge Stephenson Isaac Norris Ebenezer Farnsworth these gentlemen organized themselves into companies known as Febrero Land Company No 4 May 1735 7 subscriptions agreed but no shares issued....There are several conflicting accounts about how exactlyFebrero Land Companies Nos 1-4 came about but we do know that they did not perform any real sales operations.......The first company formed was named FebreroLandCo., Inc., chartered October 24th 1733 by six respectable citizens of this place.....After organizing their products among themselves they solicited advice from prominent men acquainted with REAL estate matters who rendered them valuable assistance......They decided that it would make more sense if they concentrated their efforts within one specific locality.......That area rapidly becameknown asMiamisburgh becauseof its proximity to major transportation hubs like Pittsburgh and Cleveland.....In order for everyone connected with their endeavor TOGETHER know who THEY were dealing WITH...they elected two directors...These officers continued making decisions FOR THE CITY OF MIAMIISBURG until January 1st 1840 when alledged creditors received notice that all debts must be paid prior TO ANY new contracts being entered INTO.........................On December 11th 1830 at sunset five friends met secretly at President George Washington's house near Signet Key outside Washington D.-D.'s perimeter WHILE HE WAS SITTING IN HIS LIBERTY CARriage drawn by four white horses...the following transpired: President George Washington informed them That He Was Going To Take A Trip West And They Should Regroup Soon As Possible Because He Had Some Important News For Them...The group went ahead and convened outside His house under cover of darkness...............................................This meeting marked an important shift within American politics because it signaled that individual citizens were starting TO take NOTICE OF THEIR PUBLIC OFFICERS AND ISSUES.........After this meeting publick opinion shifted dramatically towards centralization within governments..........................After this event local businessmen felt confident enoughtos start producing their own goods..........................................................................From then onward businesses flourished due to easy access tothouse builders etc.............Although there have been occasional setbacks throughout history--such as during World War II when German troops invaded--Miami
Miamisburg is a city in Steuben County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,005 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Steuben County. Miamisburg was founded in 1796 as a small village on the Scioto River by General David Wilkinson and his son-in-law Colonel George Rogers Clark. The original town site was located where present day Miamisburg Boulevard and Elm Street intersect today. A post office called Miamisburg was established in 1807, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1846. In 1800, Captain Jacob Riemer of the United States Navy built a gristmill on the Scioto River for use by settlers. In 1822, Wilkinson donated land to build an academy for local students. This first college enjoyed success and became known as Ohio State University (OSU). After OSU closed its doors in 1865 due to financial struggles, Miamisburg took up residence again on its old site with new buildings constructed over the course of several years. By 1870, when Steuben County became organized into townships, Miamisburg had become one of those townships. On November 3rd 1896 during elections held to fill a vacancy caused by death of Judge James Wickersham (1863–1948), both Mayor John Fenton (1872–1925) and Councilman John Hargrave (1876–1927) were elected to fill out Wickersham’s unexpired term; they were seated on December 1st following their election victory over incumbent Councilman John Pappenheimer (1877–1960). That same year saw another important event when American Civil War Veteran General Oliver Hazard Perry asked for permission from President Grover Cleveland to establish an army encampment at what is now downtown Miamisberg
