Miamisburg is a town in Licking County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,582 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Miamis Creek which flows through it. The first settler in Miamisburg was John Prentiss who arrived in 1811. He lived on a farm that he bought from Nicholas Wright and his family. John's grandson Moses Prentiss founded the village of Miamisburg in 1837 when he acquired 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day downtown Miamisburg. Russian immigrant Dmitry Karpyuk settled in what is now Miamisburg in 1839 and named it after his birthplace, Russia. Karpyuk had come to America as a boy with his parents and brother Alexei. In 1846, Rutherford Babbitt purchased 1,600 acres (500 hectares) northeast of present-day downtown Miamisburg from Russian immigrant Dmitry Karpyuk for $10 per acre ($100 per hectare). This area became known as the Babbitt Purchase because it included most of what is now eastern Licking County sideshore today. Babbitt served as an Trustee for Licking County from its organization on November 3, 1800 until his death on October 16, 1865; during this time he also served as President of the Board of Education for Licking County residents under then Board Chairman David Davenport In 1892–1893 Babbitt donated land to create Parkland Memorial Cemetery near downtown Miamisburg which remains one of the largest private cemeteries in Ohio today with over 6 million people interred there since its establishment more than 50 years ago! In 1906 Hoadley & Co., grocery store owners located at 815 Main Street NE opened their doors and many small businesses followed suit within a few years including J Hoadley Cigar & Tobacco Warehouse #1 which still stands today across the street at 403 Main Street NE
