Mentor, Ohio is home to the United States Military Academy (USMA), one of the most prestigious military academies in the world. The Academy was founded in 1802 and has educated more than 1,500 cadets from all over the world. The USMA offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees that can lead to a career in the military or civilian life. During World War II, Mentor became known as "The Arsenal of Democracy" because it was located on Canfield Road just outside of Columbus. In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Mentor and announced that America's largest Army Weapons Plant would be built there. The plant produced tanks, planes, artillery pieces, missiles and other weapons for America's war effort. Today, Mentor is home to two large schools: USMA/Cadet School and USMA/Senior School. The Cadet School provides education for young men who want to become cadets in the United States Military Academy or another branches of service. Mentor is a town in Highland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first military post in Mentor was Fort Covington on the Scioto River in 1790. In 1812, it became a military academy under the jurisdiction of West Point for officers of the U.S. Army and its predecessor agencies. In 1861, when Ohio seceded from the Union, Mentor became a military post again under War Department jurisdiction with an enrollment of only 150 students. In 1865-1866, it served as garrison for Springfield Armory during that city's period of reconstruction after Civil War Reconstruction. On October 11, 1898, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army advanced through Mentor into downtown and destroyed almost all buildings except two churches which were used as barracks for troops until 1907 when they were torn down to make way for new streets and sidewalks. On November 8th 1911 during World War I Colonel John Mosely ( uncle of future congressman John Mosely) organized and led 1st Battalion U S Artillery on maneuvers near Mentor towards Sandusky where he landed his unit to support First World War efforts Aftermath plaque at Camp Grant National Battlefield Park

It was founded in 1812 by General William Henry Harrison as a place to store goods brought overland from Michigan during his construction of the Erie Canal. In 2002, Mayor Tom Barrett announced that he would not seek re-election because he felt his time had been wasted on something that no longer warranted his effort. In 2012, then-Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced he would not seek reelection either due to health concerns; however, he remains active with local organizations such as the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce and United Way
