The Coast Guard Station in Mentor, Ohio was established on October 1, 1903. The station was originally located on the East Side of Cleveland and operated out of a small building that is now known as the Commandant's Office. In 1915, the Coast Guard moved to their present location on Canfield Road in Mentor. On November 2, 1917, the first cutter became operational at the Station when it was launched from West Point Naval Hospital. The Coast Guard also purchased two ferries which they used for transportation between the Station and Cleveland docks. In 1941-1942, a new tower was built at the Station which served as both Headquarters and Operations Center for all aspects of Coast Guard operations in Northeast Ohio. The new tower allowed for better communication with other units across the country and gave access to more equipment and resources than ever before. Additionally, during World War II, there were numerous dramatic events that took place at or near the Station including raids by submarines against shipping off of Lake Erie; air combat over Cleveland; and rescues from sinking vessels in Lake Superior. In 1969-1970 an addition was made to Headquarters Building which housed additional offices and personnel barracks for both civilian employees and military members who were assigned to support coast guard activities in Northeast Ohio. This addition also included a helicopter pad which served as a proving ground for different types of helicopters used by law enforcement agencies throughout Northeastern Ohio. In 1984-1985 an automated weather radar system was installed at Headquarters Building which allowed for real time monitoring of all aspects of coastal weather in Northeast Ohio allowing our officers to provide timely protection against maritime threats while ensuring accurate information sharing between stations across our region. Since its inception, Headquarters Building have been home to many notable alumni including United States District Judge James Garmony who became Chairman of the United States District Court for Northern Michigan after serving as Deputy Director at HQ until he left to become CEO at Delphi Automotive LLP; Major General Clark Brewster who commanded III Corps during Operation Desert Storm; Rear Admiral John Wirths who assumed command of Fifth Fleet following his retirement from service as Commander U S Naval Forces Europe after twenty years service as Vice Admiral commanding American Forces Mediterranean Sea Systems Command (USNAFEMC); Captain Richard Vrooman who currently serves as Superintendent/Director Of Education & Physical Plant - mentoring & developing physical plant requirements school districts throughout Northwest Ohio; Lieutenant Governor Ted Strickland (D), State Representative Frank Ciaravale (R) - members House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Affairs - authoring billocating federal funds towards programs that support veteran education; Congressman Jim Renacci (R) - ranking member subcommittee on Defense Appropriations submits legislation authorizing appropriations increase for National Defense University Today, headquartered within Administration Building are three detachments: Patrol Boat Services Detachment One is responsible for patrol activity along Lake Erie’s shoreline eastward into New York City waters; Patrol Boat Services Detachment Two operates motorboats available 24 hours per day/7 days per week boat patrols along Greater Cleveland’s water boundaries southward into Indiana waters proper; Helicopter Landing Platform Squadron One provides helicopter landing facilities ashore adjacent to headquarters buildings necessaryFOR THE OPERATION OF THE COAST GUARD STATIONS IN NEIGHBORHOODS INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO CLEVELAND AND MENTOR

The Mentor Coast Guard Museum has a rich history of giving gifts to the community. The museum was founded in 1926 and, until 2002, it was known as the Mentor Yacht Club. In 1932, the club offered a gift to the city of Mentor for $1,500. In 1954, the club donated a Corvette to the town of Mentor for use by the coast guard. In 1970, the club donated an ice skated rink to the town of Mentor. In 1981, we gave a beautiful sculpture called "Nemo" (a character from Greek mythology) as a gift to citizens of Mentor who helped raise money for our Sailors Memorial Fund. We also gave away many items such as fishing gear and life jackets during our Annual Donations Drive in 1982-1983. In 1985, we donated an American Flagpole and Tres Leches Biscuit Maker to help support local charities in our community along with many other donations over the years!
Mentor, Ohio is a small town located in the heart of the Great Lakes region. It is situated on the north-central bank of the Muskingum River and contains a population of just over 1,000 people. The village was founded in 1807 by General Anthony Wayne and his forces as a military outpost to support Fort Pitt in what is now Pennsylvania. After the end of the war, Wayne decided to make Mentor his permanent home and it continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1907. The village has been known for its manufacturing base ever since it was founded. In addition to manufactures such as agriculture equipment, paper products and clothing, Mentor also produces agricultural machinery, toys and other consumer goods. Some of Mentor's most famous residents include General Anthony Wayne himself, who moved here from Alloway County, Scotland after service in the American Revolution; industrialist John Dorman; author Ellen Glasgow; basketball coach Rick Majerus; ice cream maker Milton Bradley; and actor/director Vincent Price. In recent years, there has been significant growth within Mentor itself as well as within nearby communities around Greater Cincinnati. This growth has come about through several initiatives including: an open-air market that allows for local farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers; a new library that opened its doors in 2007; an online shopping mall called "Mentor Village", which provides access to more than 180 local businesses;; and much more!

In addition, the Coast Guard is responsible for developing coast guard safety standards which are used by other government agencies across North America. In recent years, the Coast Guard has become known for its dedication to diversity and inclusion. This year, they announced that they will be sponsoring a new program called "Spirit of Service." This program encourages members of the Coast Guardsmen and women who have served in any capacity within our nation’s military or intelligence communities to donate their time or money towards giving back to society. This year also saw significant upgrades made to their headquarters in New York City which makes it easier for members of the community to get involved with their organization. Overall, the Coast Guard has been an important part of American history and continues to play an important role today in providing essential life-saving services.

Mentor, Ohio is a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Summit–Zelotes micropolitan area. Mentor was founded by Captain John Mentor and his family in 1796 as a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1814, it became a village and was named for John's mentor, George Washington. The first school in Mentor opened in 1824 and served students from rural areas around the community. In 1859, the first library was built and it remains one of the most important institutions in town today. In 1865, Mentor became home to its first telephone exchange. Today, Mentor has several restaurants and stores as well as an outdoor amphitheater that hosts concerts throughout the year. Mentor is also known for its wrestling program which began in 1919 and has won over 40 championships since then including six state championships; three national titles; two US Open Championships (in 1951 and 1960); and two Olympics (in 2004 and 2008). The town also produces annual Apple Blossom Festival Parade which features floats made entirely out of apple blossoms.
