There are a number of coffee pioneers in Mentor,Ohio. The first coffee house in Mentor was founded by John Knight and his wife Frances in 1852. It was the only business in town and it served grinding coffee beans from their home. In 1862, J.D. Hoyt opened the first grinder shop west of the Mississippi River and began making French press coffee. By 1865, Hoyt's Coffee House had become one of the most important businesses in town with its daily clientele of local farmers, merchants, and professionals. In 1892, Harry Bogan opened his own grocery store on Main Street and soon became known as one of Ohio's leading purveyors of artisan coffee products. Bogan introduced a new type of filter paper called "Bogan Paper" which helped improve flavor and reduce bitterness for uniform cup quality across all types of roasts. He also developed an automated milk frother that made milk more smooth than ever before. His store continued to be a major player in the industry until it closed near the turn of the century due to Prohibition-era regulations banning alcohol sales within city limits). The early years of prohibition were difficult for small businesses like Harry Bogan's Store because they could not sell liquor without risking prosecution or business loss. As a result, many small shops closed down during prohibition while larger commercial establishments flourished with CONTINUOUS production throughout 1922 - 1933! In 1907, Mentor's first café opened and served coffee until 1959. In that time, The Herndon Coffee Shop became known for its high-quality beans and delicious pastries. The Herndon Coffee Shop closed down in 1959 but its legacy continues on in Mentor today as an institution that provides quality coffee and baked goods to residents of the city.
Mentor, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 34,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH metropolitan area. Mentor was founded by Nicholas Biddle in 1824 as a small village on the Scioto River with a population of about 100 people. In 1850, Mentor became an incorporated town and has since grown to have a population over 10,000 residents. In 1892, Mentor burned down one of its own buildings to protest railroad construction through their community and won $5,000 from the railroads in an arbitration case. The city's downtown district now features several buildings built for banks and other commercial enterprises during that time period including three blocks north of central park on Main Street between Euclid Avenue and Knox Road known as "The Fifth Triangle". Mentor was named after Nicholas Biddle who first settled there in 1824 with his family following his purchase of land east of what is now downtown from Anthony Johnson.
