The Ohio National Guard was first organized in 1903. The unit was created to help protect the state from potential threats. In 1937, the guard became an infantry regiment and was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Division in 1948. The division served in Vietnam and saw combat from 1965-1973. It was finally disbanded in 1975 and its troops were absorbed into other divisions within the military. However, the Ohio National Guard's legacy continues to this day. Today, it is one of the few units of its kind left in the United States Army. The unit is headquartered at Mentor (Ohio) Regional Airport and has a total strength of just over 4,000 soldiers. This makes it one of America's smallest active duty military formations and it is also home to a number of veteran organizations that support its mission including the Mentor Police Department SWAT team, American Legion Post 927 & Camp Hill detachment #3100.* Mentor's role as an army gift history site begins with World War II. Businesses like Sears Roebuck sent teams of men down to Pacific ports to pick up supplies for our troops*** [*See "Army Gift History: WWII"]. Mentor is a city in and the County seat of Mentor Township, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of theAkron–Canton–Youngstown metropolitan statistical area. The city was founded in 1814 by a group of English settlers who named it for General David Porter. In 1824, the first Masonic Lodge was organized in Mentor and on July 4th, 1825, the first public meeting of what would become the present-day City Council was held in the Mechanics Institute building. In 1870, an interchange with State Route 23 (now US Highways 11 and 88)was completed which made it possible to access larger markets outside of Akron and Youngstown while still staying within Wayne County. The Post Office closed in 1964 but reopened as "Mentor", again using its original ZIP code until 2000 when it moved to its current location within Akron proper. Mentor, Ohio is a community in southern Ohio. The town was founded in 1851 by Major General James A. Butler as a trading post and outpost on the Miami River. It grew rapidly after the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was built through central Ohio in 1929, and by 1940 it had become the largest municipality in Butler County. In 1952, Mentor became an incorporated village. In 1970, it merged with neighboring Parkersburg to form the current municipality of Mentor-Parkersburg. Mentor's history is tied to that of its namesake general and political leader, James A. Butler Jr., who helped lead the United States during World War II and Reconstruction efforts in America following the Civil War. After his death in 1945, Mentor's reputation as a center of education and business growth continued to grow; today it is home to several thousand residents and businesses including three universities: Youngstown State University (YSU), Central University (CU), and Akron Community College (ACC). The first settlers to enter what is now Mentor were farmers from eastern Pennsylvania who arrived around 1790. By 1830, there were about sixty people living hereabouts; most were subsistence farmers engaged primarily in raising livestock or fishing for small game along the riverbanks. Not until after Indian Removal did white settlement begin specifically within present-day Mentor Township; this happened between 1830s when some squatters replaced Native Americans as land owners hereabouts . The area around present day Mentor was part of Mingo Township until 1800 when Benjamin Fenton sold part of that township eastward to John Ritchie for $1USD per acre land grant – thus starting what would be known as "the Ritchie Purchase." The first settler named Mentor may have been Amos Dixon who arrived about 1800 from Connecticut among other early arrivals into this region near modern day Lancasterburgh on the south bank of the Miami River adjacent to modern day Parkersburg on February 3rd1800 at which time he purchased 2/3 interest in shares worth $40USD from John Packer Sr.. Many more names are recorded throughout these early years but they unfortunately are all lost forever due to lack of original paperwork or memory thereof! Although our records suggest that many later families also moved into this area we cannot verify this information with certainty since not one name has yet been found listed on any official government document dating back to before 1851 !! Unfortunately such sporadic oral tradition can easily contradict any written record so we must rely largely upon memories or recollections from those who lived through those earliest days ! Emmons & Company opened their mercantile store at 514 N Main Street just north of today’s park entrance April 12th1851″ according to Business Records kept by Paperman’sville Historical Society Incorporated Herewith! This store operated for over 50 years providing American made goods including groceries, items for trade shows & events etc etc…. Emmons also donated food supplies for Union troops during both world wars !! Today’s paper box building across Main Street from Emmons Store was once located behind Wabash Furniture store where Dranes attended school during grade school days….. Prior To That dwellings could be seen located upriver on today’s highbank opposite old power plant!!! Terrible fires destroyed homes back then so no documentary evidence remains however large numbers burned Torybuilt houses according To Some History books There must have been Lots Of them Burning Thanks To Good Neighbors Who interceded One Evening !! On July 4th1920 two men working side by side loading logs onto a flatboat went missing while out boating off Chagrin Falls… Unknown Men Later Confirmed Asearchers From Cleveland Attracted By Headlines And TV Reporting They Had Found Their bodies Just BELOW THE falls!!!!!! During Prohibition era many local businessmen offered their services as “buzzaroos” helping law enforcement make arrests&securing licenses etc……Today still some do offer services like security guard,, driver,, handyman ect ect……………..Many thanks go outTo everyone involved For Helping us Build Our Town Back Up Again!!!!!!!!!
