Mentor, Ohio is home to the US Army's 1st Infantry Division. The divisional motto is "Erected to preserves order and maintenance of public tranquility." The history of the 1st Infantry Division began with the Wisconsin National Guard in 1899. At that time, the unit was known as "The Blue Devils" because its colors were blue and white. On November 10, 1935, the division was redesignated as "The 1st Infantry Division". In 1940, it became part of World War II's Europe-wide command structure called Theater 8th Army Group (8AG). During this time, The 1st Infantry Division fought in Normandy and then Germany. After the war ended, The 1st Infantry Division returned to United States soil in 1946. It was disbanded in 1951 but reformed again in 1965 as aMechanized Brigade Combat Team (MBCT). From 1966-1968 it served as an armored brigade garrison at Fort Hood before being deployed to Vietnam for Operation Rolling Thunder. On July 9th, 1971 4/5ths of brigade Combat Team 2/7th Armored Cavalry Regiment attacked North Vietnamese forces near Khe Sanh airbase while under NATO command. This single attack led to one of the most successful military operations during Operation Linebacker II;[1] Battle of Khe Sanh which resulted in total military victory for allies over NVA forces

The Mentor, Ohio Army Depot Garrison was founded in 1917 and was initially an armory. It later became the army's main supply depot for the area and also served as a training ground for the Ohio National Guard. The depot closed in 1978 but its location is still remembered by locals who frequent its storerooms for antique firearms, military uniforms, and other memorabilia.
Mentor, Ohio is a small city located in the state of Ohio. The population was 5,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Summit Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mentor began as a small community on the edge of what is now Mentor Township. In 1836, Reverend John Pritchard founded a Baptist church in what is now downtown Mentor. He named it after his mentor and friend, James Fenton Eaton. The first post office in Mentor opened in 1851. In 1872, Reverend Eaton donated land for a high school and college in what is now downtown Mentor. The college became known as the Cleveland State University School of Dentistry and Medicine before becoming Case Western Reserve University School of Nursing in 1972. In 1907, an act was passed by the Ohio General Assembly to create a township within Summit County to be called "Mentor." The township was created on July 1, 1907 and renamed "Mentor" after Reverend James Fenton Eaton's mentor and friend from childhood who had helped pioneer Baptistism in this area. On December 12, 2009, Mayor Tom Smith announced that he would not seek reelection due to health concerns; he has since retired from public life effective January 1st 2020 On November 3rd 2019 Anthony Gable became Mayor of Mentor following Tom Smith's retirement

This gift was later used by Harry Truman when he visited Washington D C on May 8th 1945 to receive Ulysses S Grant’s papers after his death at age 63 years old on April 12th 1945 at home in Springfield Virginia USA
