Medina, Ohio is a small town in the county of Stark with a population of about 8,000. It was founded by early Ohio settlers in 1810. The first military unit to be stationed here was the 3rd Regiment United States Volunteers, which arrived in 1812. The town quickly became an important center for munitions production and post-war reconstruction following the American Civil War. Medina's economy suffered after Reconstruction but has since begun to bounce back thanks to its strong community spirit and its location within easy driving distance of major cities. Since the late 1990s, Medina has become home to one of the largest militaries in central Ohio as part of the Cleveland Defense Command (CDC). This unique arrangement allows our troops from all over Northeast Ohio access to quality training and equipment at CDC headquarters while providing a unique opportunity for civic engagement with military members from other communities in Northeast Ohio. Our troops have also helped organize several significant events such as commemorative services for fallen soldiers and support for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Medina's rich military history goes back centuries – it is where General George Washington met his future wife Martha during her stay here during his first term as President of America (1789-97). Medina also played an important role during World War I when Major General John J Pershing’s “Black Tom” convoy ran into trouble near here on July 2, 1916; only five trucks were lost but many more were damaged or destroyed due to hitting rocks and trees along the way! Today Medina is still home to some of America's most elite units – these include: The Cleveland National Guard's 119th Infantry Brigade Combat Team; 1st Battalion, 45th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), based at Fairmont State University; 2nd Battalion, 131st Armor Regiment (Heavy), based at JROTC Camp Verde; Battery C Company/3rd Battalion/47th Artillery Regiment (Rocket artillery) headquartered at Akron Municipal Airport; 1st Squadron/19th Cavalry Group based out of Muskegon Heights Airport; Headquarters & Headquarters Battery/2nd Brigade Combat Team Reserve Component Field Army Airborne Division - attached here since October 2003
