Medina is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 by John Denton and others as the townsite of calling for the new planned village of Medina on the Scioto River. In 1827, it became part of the newly formed Summit County. Medina's first post office opened in 1830. Medina's growth accelerated from 1850 to 1870 when it annexedlying townships of Arlington and Delaware Heights. Its population reached 2,500 by 1860. By 1880, it had increased to 10,000 but declined thereafter due to economic decline and migration away from rural areas into urban centers such as Cincinnati and Cleveland. The original house on Riverside Drive which still stands today is built in 1825 by John Denton while he was pastor of Stony Point Methodist Church near what is now Delaware Heights Cemetery. Mr. Denton had come overland from Kentucky with his family after selling his farm land thereabouts to become a settler in Medina Township (now Arlington). His purchase included pieces of both sides of an old common that ran along the Scioto River between present-day Riverside Drive and its junction with Cedar Road outside today's town limits; this property later became known as "Denton Park." In 1827 he erected a simple log cabin here for himself and his family.. . He also purchased some nearby land including lot No 5 on which he erected a more substantial frame structure called "The Hacienda" or "John's House". From this point forward until HIS death in 1865 our house served as our home until we moved out onto our present site about three years ago (Mr.) Denton having died quite suddenly not long before we did so! continued Mrs., Eliza Aiken
Medina was founded in 1796 by ethnic German settlers, who named the town for their home city of Medina, Germany. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Scioto River and its proximity to the major settlements in central Ohio. By 1800, Medina had a population of about 200 people. In 1802, it received its charter from the Ohio General Assembly and became an incorporated town. The town experienced rapid growth during the mid-19th century as agricultural production increased and new businesses were established in Medina. In 1864, Medina was renamed Huntington by order of President Abraham Lincoln after his Visit to America throughout Ohio.
