Medina was founded in 1810 by John Smedley and Daniel Boone as a village on the Scioto River. The name Medina is fromage meaning "milk" or "pottage." In 1824, Medina separated from Ashtabula Township to become its own independent municipality. In 1834, it became the county seat of Medina County. The first store in Medina opened in 1836 and was owned by William Hoyle. A millinery store operated between 1840-1845; it later became known as the Hanna House Store. In 1861, when Union General Ulysses S Grant came to visit his troops stationed at Fort Meade near Medina, he stayed at the Hanna House until 3 p.m., when he moved into Soldiers' Home #2 on nearby Columbus Road to rest before continuing his journey home that evening.. The first courthouse in Medina opened on December 15, 1846 with Judge Wartime Tucker presiding over proceedings and costs reported to be $1,500 (). On January 4, 1850 an act authorizing township trustees to erect public school buildings within their respective townships was passed by both houses of the legislature; these were finally finished two years later (March 14th). That same year saw also groundbreaking for what would become First Methodist Church located at 522 State Street (). As early as 1830s local settlers had been exploring various possibilities for site for a new community on what would ultimately be named Medina Township due primarily to its strategic location midway between Ashtabula and Toledo – convenient transportation hub then and now – since easy access to other central Ohio settlements made such development more attractive than earlier attempts which often failed due eitherto unfavorable geography or lack of support from government officials who viewed such communities as nuisances rather than opportunities.). After much debate among residents one vote favored establishment of a township but no action was taken due primarily because there were few willing participants given that land titles/ownership remained firmly with those who had originally claimed it/themselves back after expenses associated with settlement (e.g., purchase of additional piecemeal parcels). Still some discussion occurred about setting up shop specifically within township boundaries but no votes were taken until February 6th when decision maker James Davenport pronounced: "Let us endeavor to have our limits where we may lay them without detriment hereto". There must be something done about this great mass of people some how getting together". Finally unanimously approved by both houses on May 11th commissioners Jaffe & Goudreau recommended forming three districts each consisting only of blocks or square miles - one bordering Hardin County towards Cincinnati while two others encompassed most or all partsastern Holmes County including present day Delaware Township etc.) Commissioners convened again on July 14th following recommendation from district attorneys Samuel Segee & Hiram Jewett who stated: Three Districts will Be Formed With Respect To Which THESE ARE REQUIRED STATEMENTS BEING MADE BY THE COMMISSIONERS UPON THEIR RETURN FROM A VISIT TO THAT DISTRICT LAST SEPTEMBER" thereby completing visioning process leading up eventually to establishment Of present-day Delaware Township which bordered Hardin County approximately where modern day Ironton sits today once again coming under direct jurisdiction OF THE STATE OF OHIO!...
