Medina, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of the state of Ohio. It is located in Medina County and had a population of 2,763 at the 2000 census. Medina was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1814 as part of the Scioto Purchase. The name Medina means "place where beans grow." The first stores opened in Medina in 1815 and coffee was roasted here for the first time on December 12, 1816. By 1830, there were ten stores open. Medina also became an important transportation center with its location at the junction of two wagon routes and its connections to other states through water routes. The community developed into a busy commercial center with several banks, two churches, three schools, four hotels and several stores. Medina Grove Cemetery contains remains of some of Medina's early settlers including Major John Cranch (1792-1866), George Higginson (1795-1868), Isaac Dixon (1800-1864) and Jeremiah Latrobe (1798-1861). The cemetery has also been home to many animals such as sheepdogs, cows and pigs dating back to pioneer times including one instance when a sow named Polly was buried there along with her six piglets!
