The Coast Guard has been providing security and disaster relief services to the people of Medina, Ohio since 1903. The Coast Guard Station Medina is located on the Medina River and was originally established as a lighthouse. In 1912, the Coast Guard purchased land at what is now the junction of State Route 5 and State Route 422 to build a new station. The first boat coming into the station was an American Flag Boat. In 1951, the Coast Guard acquired two new boats- a motorboat (MV-1) and a turbine-powered lifeboat (LB-2). The LB-2 became operational in 1952 and served as both primary rescue boat and SAR vessel for local operations until 1984. In 1984, an addition to the Station was constructed which included a command center, office space, classrooms, showers, laundry facilities and more. Today’s Coast Guard Station Medina provides Denison County with essential support during emergencies including floods or earthquakes.

Medina is a city in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. The city is named after Saint Mary of Bethany. Medina was founded by James Caldwell and others in 1817 as a small settlement on the Scioto River. It became a town in 1851 and a city in 1903. The area now known as Medina was part of the Northwest Territory formed from parts of Virginia and Kentucky after the American Revolution. In 1792, when Ohio became an Federal state, it included all of what is now Medina County except for part of Cincinnati which belonged to Indiana Territory. In 1800, James Caldwell settled on the Scioto River downstream from where Toledo would be founded two years later. He laid out a town on his land called Caldwellville with Wm Hennepin as its first mayor and five other merchants controlling 60 acres (24 hectares). On February 22nd, 1817, Caldwell submitted to the U.S. Congress an application fortownship on the Scioto River due to its strategic location between Muskingum County in the east and Cleveland in the west; it became one of thirteen townships created during Pennsylvania's Western Reserve District (which later organized into Cleveland) during that period of rapid growth following independence from Great Britain In 1821–22, City Councilman Ebenezer Higgins proposed that Medina name itself "Bethlehem." A campaign waged by Higgins resulted in over 100% voter approval for this change to municipal government with Hanna serving as Mayor pro tempore until her election victory November 3rd, 1830 which made her America's first female mayor After becoming a city within Ohio proper – meaning without annexation by neighboring municipalities such as Mansfield or Berea – Medina experienced modest growth until World War II when development accelerated around military bases located close to downtown including Love Field Air Force Base just south of town limits while L-5 Naval Air Station ran parallel north/south off Vine Street near Union Terminal Railroad Depot complex housing many agencies involved with naval aviation like Naval Weapons Center director Rear Admiral William “Bull” Richardson CBE who also served as Director Emeritus USN Museum historian Fred Kappeenan who described it this way: "L-5 NAS had great impact on our community because . . . most civilian activity stopped at Love Field AFB" Please see: https://www2a0d4cfe8b1ceb9e3ebcdc041fcfda6ed/.pdf?resize=true&hl=en
The Coast Guard gift history begins with the establishment of the Coast Guard in 1915. At that time, there was no national coast guard and the responsibility for security on the American coastline fell to individual state militias. The first permanent Coast Guard station was established at Governors Island in New York City in 1916. The first federal request for a coast guard ship came from California in 1924. A small Coast Guard cutter, USCGC Kittredge, was ordered to patrol coastal waters off California’s Central Valley. In 1936, the Coast Guard purchased its first large amphibious ship, CGSS Maine. During World War II, the Coast Guard saw action against Nazi submarines and ships while providing Search and Rescue services along America’s coasts. After World War II ended, funding limitations made it difficult for the Coast Guard to keep up with new technology and demands for service. This led to a shift in focus towards maritime law enforcement and safety missions within our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Beginning in 1959, when President Eisenhower created the United States Merchant Marine Services Administration (USMSA),ECTION 7 of USMSA legislated that all vessels subject to USMSA jurisdiction must be registered with USMSA and display an appropriate flag at all times while under their command or control. As a result of this change in policy, many old non-registered merchant vessels were seized by local law enforcement during drug interdiction operations or other security matters without any legal recourse available to their owners. Many of these vessels were not returned until after they had been deregistered by USMSA and became part of public domain again through reclamation or donation by governmental agencies such as NOAA or private organizations likethe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In 1975 Congress passed what is now known as Section 901(a) of Title 14 United States Code which provides that allautical equipment – including lifesaving appliances – carried aboard any vessel owned by a State or political subdivision thereof shall be governed by regulations prescribed by Secretary of Commerce .
