The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the world's most powerful air forces. The USAF traces its origins to World War I, when it was founded as the American Volunteer Aero Club. In FY2012 there were approximately 1,500 active duty members assigned to 173 Combat Squadrons flying more than 350 missions per month worldwide performing an estimated $2 billion worth of airstrikes supporting coalition partners

The Medina Air Force Base gift history can be traced back to World War II when the Army's 4th Infantry Division stationed here. In 1951, the Air Force was established and it soon became evident that an airbase would be necessary on the city's outskirts. The Delaware Park adjacent to the base was selected as the site for the first USAF Headquarters in Ohio. Construction began in 1953 and by 1957, all of AFB's infrastructure had been completed including a recreation area, hangars, barracks, and a cookhouse/banquet hall. On 1 September 1957, Colonel Everett "Ted" Ahern assumed command of AFB from Major General J.J. Nicholson. From then until his retirement in December 1995, Ted Ahern served as Director of Aircraft Maintenance at AFB. In 1961, during missile testing near Fairfield County Airport east of Dayton, Ohio two F-105D aircraft ditched after takeoff with three pilots and their instructor Flying Officer Ruppert aboard; both members of Squadron 51 (VF-5) edging dangerously close to an airport controlled by China which they were bombing at this time! Lt.(jg.) Don Ziegler made an emergency landing on a nearby farmstead just west of Dayton Municipal Airport but all five passengers survived! This event is considered one of America's earliestair accidents! In early 1962 several modifications were made to improve AFB facilities including construction of a new Recreation Area with tennis courts and a pool; also new Hangars I & II were built with two stories each providing ample room for military vehicles and aircraft; also reinforcements were added to support tactical Fighter Wing operations statewide including additional barracks for Officers & enlisted personnel as well as Storehouses V-2 & III which housed ammunition depots; these stores continued into the 21st century! Additionally another Flight Training Facility was added named after Colonel Everett "Ted" Ahern himself - USAF Technical School -later renamed Aerospace Command Technical School (AATTEC). During 1963 renovation work on AFB Headquarters Annex commenced which included replacement of outdated roofing with present day tiled roofs; addition of new bathroom buildings overlooking Edwards park across USASAF property while still preserving original architecture; additionally installationof modern lighting systems within dormitories followed later that year! New Facilities Commander Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Waugh reported in late 1964 that AFB had become "...the most advanced aviation center in the United States." In 1966 work began on four more Hangars which would replace those destroyed during earlier renovations: hangar #1 was completed by November1966 while hangar #3 & #4 followed in 1967-68 respectively. Even today – thirty years later – movement between different hangars at AFB remains extremely difficult due onlyto changes in squadron assignments!! With growth came increased traffic demands on AFB facilities necessitating expansion projects throughout 1969-1970: Project #1 comprised demolition or modificationof existing barracks/kitchenettes along With additionoftemporary buildingsto capitol complex housing offices responsible For air defense activities Across USASAF property And project #2 encompassed additions tototalover 400acres surrounding existing Orchard Park Cemetery located directly behind Main Gate Of AFB...allowing more than 10000vehiclesTo ParkingLot AtMain gate !! After service members return from Vietnam President Nixon presented AFBs emblematic structure -Everett H Armstrong Memorial Building -to active duty pilot Capt Jeffrey L Mills that same year
