To the navies of the world, Mayfield Heights, Ohio is a vibrant community that stands as a testimony to the courage and determination of our sailors. Since 1951, when USS Lexington (CV-6) deployed its crew to support Operation Neptune's Spear in South Korea, Mayfield Heights has been home to some of America's most distinguished naval vessels. From submarines and Amphibious Armored Vehicles (AAVs) to destroyers and battlecruisers, these warships have come from all corners of the country to serve their nation with distinction. Since 1951, USS Lexington has been deployed five times - twice in Southeast Asia and once in Europe. On each occasion, her crew gave back by sponsoring local children with impressive gifts such as clothes, books or toys. Mayfield Heights is a small town in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Mayfield Hills School District serves the community and it has two schools: the Mayfield Heights Elementary School and the Mayfield Heights Middle School. The school district also operates an agricultural research center which helps to improve local agriculture by studying soil health and plant growth. A post office called Mayfield Heights was established in 1892, and closed in 1951. The present name of the town was given to it by its first settler, John Caldwell Mayfield Jr., after he donated land for a public square in what is now the town center. He also named one of his daughters "Mayfeld" for this purpose. The first stores opened in what is now Mayfield Heights when development began around 1900s as farming became more common in that area due to rich soil conditions. By 1910 there were ten businesses operating within what is now town limits with a population of only 300 people! Today there are just six businesses left within those boundaries that serve a population of over 2,000 people! In 1945/46 during World War II many residents helped out with munitions production at nearby Akron's Kress Corporation while their homes were used as storage facilities; many remainCommunity members still help out with munitions production today (located east of town). In addition to manufacturing goods local service companies served as key players such as: American Time Service Company (now known as AT&T), Piggly Wiggly fast food restaurant (now known as Burger King), Erie Telephone Company (later Bell Atlantic)violence prevention program offered free pizza to residents
