Mayfield Heights is a small town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Butler and Trumbull Counties. The first settler in what is now Mayfield Heights was John Denton. He platted the town in 1824 and named it for General George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. The name may have been inspired by neighboring Butler Township which had been named for Colonel James Wilkinson (1768-1834), one of Washington's aides-de-camp during his military campaigns in North America. Most of the early settlers were farmers or mechanics who made their living from agriculture or trade. One early resident, Elijah Sherer, became known as "the Father of Mayfield Heights." In 1837, a Methodist preacher named Ebenezer Burt moved to Mayfield from Muskingum County and founded a church there that remains today. Mayfield Heights is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 6,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbiana County municipality. The peak of construction activity around this time occurred between 1830-1850 when many Polish immigrants found work on new canal projects nearby such as John Kilby’s mill that used water from the Scioto River for its mills; or Anthony Jellinek’s brick factory which produced bricks for buildings throughout Greater Cleveland; or George Wirtz’s sawmills that processed lumber from local trees into boards; or David Milam’s iron works which built rails for wagon trains departing from Cleveland downriver each day; all of these businesses brought new people and families to town during an early formative period known as "the Gilded Age." A fire destroyed much of downtown mayfield Heights on December 9th 1895 while many residents were inside their homes celebrating Christmas with their families before returning home for New Year's festivities.
