Mayfield Heights is a small town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Mayfield Heights were Daniel and Susanna Mayfield, who arrived in 1797. They founded a log cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. The Mayfields were later joined by their brother Timothy and sister Deliverance. In 1801, they built a frame home on Prospect Avenue. They continued to live there until their death in 1853. In 1803, Nathan Page purchased land in what is now Mayfield Heights from the Mayfields. He began to build a house on his property and named it "Nathan Page's House". The Page family lived there until 1840 when they sold it to John Swartzwelder. He moved it to its current location on Seymour Street in 1851. John Swartzwelder also built a store on his property which he called "The Jugs" (later renamed "The Post Office"). He maintained it until 1906 when he sold it to Wm Burchill for $1,000 cash plus four horses and two wagons). Burchill used the store as his home from 1906-1910 before selling it again to Averil Purdy for $2,500 cash plus two horses and four wagons). Purdy operated the post office from 1910-1920 before selling it to Harry Laughlin for $3,200 cash plus six horses and sixteen wagons). In 1922, Laughlin moved the post office into its present building which was dedicated on November 3rd of that year by Mayor George Hockley ( afterwards known as Mr. mayor ). Mayfield Heights experienced some growth during World War II with many residents moving into Cleveland due to wartime shortages of housing.[1] Many more residents moved into Mayfield Heights after 1945 when Cleveland became an all-white city under newly created zoning regulations governing streetcar operations within white neighborhoods.[2] Afterward many African Americans relocated back into Mayfield Heights either through migration or purchase of homes following integration efforts throughout much of Greater Cleveland[3][4][5]. Some original white residents continue living in town while others have retired or left because they no longer find community values supportive enough.[6][7] Today most people living within the boundaries ofmayfield heights are descendants of those who once resided here[8].
The Mayfield Heights community was founded in 1881 by George and Martha Mayfield. The community had a population of about 120 people when it was first established. By 1900, the population had decreased to about 50 people. In 1907, the town of Mayfield Heights was renamed for John Fenton, an American politician who served as the 21st Mayor of Cleveland from 1914 to 1916.
