Mayfield Heights is a town in Dayton, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of Dayton between I-75 and US-4. The name "Mayfield" comes from a grant given by King George III to John Mayfield in 1784. The first settlement in what is now Mayfield Heights was made in 1794 when two brothers, James and Daniel Conley, bought over 5 acres (2 ha) of land from Nicholas Copley. There were only seven houses built until 1800 when an addition was made to the townsite that included a schoolhouse and millrace. In 1802, Captain Elijah Crosby donated land to the town for a Methodist church which became St. Paul's Episcopal Church; it still stands today as one of Dayton's most historic buildings. The first post office in Mayfield Heights was established on July 1, 1814 by Elias Huyck with the name "Dearborn." It changed its name to "Mayfield Heights" on February 28, 1825 after President James Ketchum granted the town site to it via executive order while he was living in Cincinnati. On October 16th of that year, mayfieldschool opened its doors for business under the new name “Mt Vernon” School District No 2 (later known as Dayton-Marietta School District). When passenger trains stopped running through Dayton during World War II many residents abandoned their homes and businesses and took refuge along I-75 south of Dayton but within easy driving distance of home. One such community was called MayFIELD HEIGHTS located about 3 miles east of I-475 between milepost 30 & 31 on State Road 714 near Cedar Point amusement park; this community disappeared during postwar years when Interstate 75 bypassed it . Today there are few remaining remnants of this once thriving community including one small cemetery west of I-475 where remains can be found among tall grasses next to an old water tower .
