The plane was used for training and missions during World War II. It was later donated to the Mayfield Heights Chamber of Commerce in 1956. The chamber became the first nonprofit organization in town to receive a grant from Congress in 1957. In 1976, the town received another donations when Lockheed Aircraft donated an L-9B Titan III jet trainer to the United States Air Force Academy at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. This donation marked the start of an annual tradition that has given scholarships and equipment to students at USAAF academies around the country. On November 3, 1984, it was announced that Northrop Grumman would donate a C-141A Globemaster III tanker aircraft to United States Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia for use as part of Operation Desert Storm military operations against Iraq. The planes were originally destined for use by Air Mobility Command (AMC) but AMC decided not to operate them due to their age and lack of fuel capacity. These planes have been used forstein patrols over airspace near Baghdad since they arrived in Quantico on December 10th 1990 On October 6th 2009, it was announced that Japan Airlines had agreed to provide four A330neo jets each valued at $200 million as part of aProgram called "Iraq Airlift." These jets will be used primarily for cargo transportation between Kuwait and Baghdad with limited passenger service available. The town was founded in 1811 and named for John Mayfield, an Indian fighter and landowner who had settled there in 1803. The first post office was established in 1813. Mayfield Heights became a borough in 1903 and a city in 1907. One of the earliest USAF gifts was a set of Spitfires fighter planes. The planes were gifted to the RAF by the USAAF on December 14th, 1941 as part of a peace-time arms trade agreement between the two countries. The RAF received these planes as thanks for their assistance during World War II. Another famous USAF gift is an F-111A Super Sabre jet fighter aircraft. This plane was gifted to Egypt in 1970 as part of a cooperative agreement between the two countries. The F-111A became one of the most popular planes in service with the USAF during the Vietnam War era. In 2006, it was announced that retired General Charles Eagan would receive an AFB Citation medal for his contributions to air force gifting throughout his career. Mayfield Heights, Ohio was founded in 1796 by General George Washington and his wife Martha. The town grew quickly because of its strategic location at the junction of two important trade routes. The population of Mayfield Heights reached 1,500 in 1819 and by 1830 it had grown to 4,000. The town's central square was developed as a commercial center around 1830. A public school was built in 1834 and a courthouse in 1837. In 1846 Mayfield Heights became the county seat of Hamilton County. The population declined during the 1850s due to a variety of reasons including buggy whip farming, the Panic of 1857, and the American Civil War. However, by 1870 Mayfield Heights had recovered sufficiently to become an agricultural community with over 100 farms. By 1900 Mayfield Heights had fallen back to its original size but continued to grow thanks to new residents moving into the area from other parts of Ohio or from abroad. In 1960 Mayfield Heights got its own municipal government which has kept it well-managed ever since. Today, Mayfields is known for its wide range of cultural attractions such as art galleries, theaters, music venues and more; as well as for being home to several important historical landmarks such as Washington Hall (named after General George Washington), Kent State University's Harrison School building (now part of Convent High School) and many other local businesses and services
