A few miles northeast along SR 33 stands today's downtown district which developed primarily around commercial activity following World War II when several factories were located there including Ford Motor Company and United States Rubber Company before moving out into other parts of town afterward. Maumee, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mercer County. The population was 30,651 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Mercer County after Dayton and Cincinnati. The name means "land of milk" in French. The first permanent settler in Maumee was Ephraim Hargrave in 1792, although several earlier attempts were made to establish a town there. The site for Maumee was chosen because it lay on a major route between Toledo and Cleveland then through what is now Erie and Ontario counties. In 1814, General James Kieft established Fort Dearborn here as part of his defenses against British forces besieging Cleveland. A year later, he named the fort after his father-in-law Daniel Boone who had helped lead an expedition that explored present-day Michigan Territory during the American Revolution. In 1815, President James Kieft appointed George Stephenson as director of Public Works to develop transportation improvements within Ohio and Western Pennsylvania; Stephenson renamed this office the Office of Road Development or Highways Department (OHRD). This department constructed four wagon roads from Canandaigua on Lake Erie to Steubenville on the Susquehanna River before moving eastward into Indiana Territory under US Colored Troops General Anthony Wayne during Indian Wars I (1816–1817). On October 15, 1817, Stephenson ordered construction of State Highway No. 1 which connectedGeorgetown with Athens by way of Springfield Township; this highway became US Route 22 when it was created as part of US Routes 122 and 291 on November 2nd (the day after Illinois statehood). The first post office at Maumee opened in 1825; its name was changed to Maumee City Hall in 1902 due to competition from nearby Dayton.
