The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) maintains a navy gift history in Maumee, Ohio dating back to 1887. In that year, the USS Buffalo was donated to the city by Commodore John D. Stockton. The ship was used as a training vessel for local officers and their families until it was retired from service in 1931. It was then donated to the NHHC and moved to its current location at Lake Erie Naval Reserve Base in 2007. Maumee, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 43,544 as of the 2010 census, making it the 11th-largest city in Ohio. Maumee is located on the Maumee River at its confluence with the Sandusky River, about 20 miles west of Toledo. The name "Maumee" means "channel mouth." The first European to visit what is now Maumee was Father Marquette in 1634 and he named it after his patron saint, Marie de Montréal. In 1787, General George Washington visited this area while back home from his Expedition against Great Britain and renamed part of present-day Lucas County after him - Washington Township becameMaumee Township on November 3, 1802. In 1806, John Cranch also founded a trading post at Maumee called Cranch's Fort on land that still stands today near downtown Maumee. It served as a depot for traders conducting trade along the Sandusky River during both American Revolutionary War (1775-77) and Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1870-71 Ironmaster James Ahern built an iron works at what is now Midland Avenue and Third Street in downtown MaumEE which supplied goods to railroads throughout Michigan and beyond. This company later became Phelps Dodge Company when they merged with Standard Oil Company in 1907. The famous water tower seen today on Third Street near Midland Avenue were built by Jardine Armstrong & Co., a British shipping line operating out of Cleveland between 1892 and 1902; their 26 feet tall water towers remain one of Cleveland's most iconic landmarks!

The town of Maumee, Ohio was founded in 1800 by a group of cleared land speculators. The name “Maumee” is derived from the Anishinaabe word, “wawaabaha,” meaning place where there are many fish. The first settlers were Methodists and other Protestants who followed George Washington when he moved west to survey the new United States. After the War for Independence, General Washington returned to America and established a military outpost at Maumee. This garrison helped protect the area from Indians and later became one of the earliest towns in the region. In 1823, Congress created a township within present-day Maumee Township, which included what is now part of downtown Maumee. In 1825, John Hays purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land just north of present-day downtown Maumee and donated it toMaumee Township as a free gift. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1838 when it had a population of over 1,000 people. During this time, Maumee became known as one of America's leading agricultural cities and remained an important trade center into the 21st century.
