The Maumee National Guard Gift History can be traced back to the early 1800s. The first national guard unit in Maumee was organized on October 15, 1819. At that time, only Ohioans were allowed to serve in the national guard and not any other state. The unit consisted of a detachment of soldiers from Erie County, Pennsylvania. In 1838, the 2nd Ohio Infantry was created as part of the 1st Brigade of militia units stationed at Sandusky (nowMaumee). On February 24, 1840, the brigade became one regiment with a full colonelcy and commandant general responsibility. The regiment served during the Mexican-American War (1846-48) and was mustered out on July 14th of that year at Brownsville Texas. The regiment returned home on November 28th and reported for duty on December 6th under General Andrew Johnson as part of his provisional army in Kentucky joining General Ulysses S Grant’s main army entering Tennessee Campaign. It is likely that some members from this regiment reached Indiana Territory after their return home due to service there in the Union Army during the war. On January 25, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for 100 thousand men into Federal service for three months to help protect New York City from Confederate Attack; these soldiers were also known as “the Transylvania Guards” because they had been raised in Austrian Hungary near Transylvania Castle where many Hungarian troops had fought against Napoleon Bonaparte during his campaign across Europe when he invaded Hungary in 1809-10 while exile following his defeat at Waterloo two years earlier. After muster out by state militias on April 30th all but a few hundred men who became Company D2/9 Massachusetts Volunteers reenlisted with their old regimental commander Colonel John ordering them to march down Ironton Road westward towards Buffalo until ordered otherwise by Brigadier General James Hurlbut who continued marching westward himself taking up positions around future sites now occupied by State University of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University before arriving at Camp Mills east of Buffalo just north of what is now Elmira Village within sight or soundof present day Niagara Falls going so far south as Fort Erie which they reached May 12th 1865 having marched overlandfrom Canada via Auburn then along Lake Ontario arriving late June 1865 nearpresent day Toronto after an arduous journey including crossing open water Several companies lost horses & equipment doing most difficult marches entire way

Maumee, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 24,769 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city inLucas County after Dayton. In 1840, Lay donated another piece of property - this time along Porter Road between roads 8th and 9th Streets - to establishMaumee Township which became one of the largest townships in Ohio when it was created on March 14, 1846 under law 6 th Genl., c 474 (). Maumee played an important role during World War II as both an American military base used by Britain and France before they were transferred to America; as well as being home to hundreds of workers engaged in production at local munitions plants such as Wernher Ruppelt's famous Maytag Manufacturing Company In 1951, Mayor Julius Hahn proposed creating a park adjacent to downtown called Rivers Landing which would include swimming beaches, a play ground for children ages 4 through 12 years old with swings/trees/water features for adults (later increased size), two restaurants/bars/theater district open late each night with live music nightly throughout summer months On November 1st 1959 voters passed Issue No 2 (Prohibition), putting into effect statewide Prohibition starting on January 1st 1960 . This effectively ended daily drinking habits all over central Ohio while leaving bars open until 3am maintained some semblanceof order maintaing since many speakeasies continued operations even after prohibition took effect This event helped spur development around Music Hall Square including new businesses such as 8-Ball Pool & Poker Club On December 15 th 1978 Maumee voters passed Issue No 3 increasing sales tax from 5% to 7%. This increase went into effect January 1 st 1979 while movie theaters remained open until midnight each night through 1986 without any change other than cigarettes becoming more expensive

The first Europeans to visit Maumee, Ohio were the French in 1795. The area was soon visited by British traders and missionaries. In 1803, the United States acquired land at the mouth of the Maumee River from France. The new United States territorial government established a Fort Dearborn on the site in 1804. In 1815, the U.S.Army built Fort Miamisburg on the west side of the river just below present-day Maumee Falls. In 1816, General Anthony Wayne attacked and killed Chief Joseph of Wyandotte County while he was visiting Ft Miamisburg. The victory helped gain credit for America as a great military power and solidify American control over much of Michigan Territory north of Lakes Huron and Georgian Bay
