Maumee, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 34,844 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Lucas County by population. The city is located on the Muskingum River and is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The first settlements in what would become Maumee were made along the banks of the Muskingum River during Shawneetown's early history as an agricultural community. In 1812, General James Wilkinson offered to purchase all of present-day Lucas County from Chief Wyandot for $5,000 cash and 10 acres (40 hectares) of land on either side of the river. However, Wilkinson only agreed to this offer if he could name his new settlement after his own father-in-law – George Washington Smith – who had helped him gain military experience during President James Ketchikan's ill-fated Alaska Expedition in 1807. With Washington's blessing, Wilkinson named his new town "Washington" after himself and began construction on what would become one of America's most important riverside towns. In 1815, when Maumee became a town under its own government with a population of just over 100 people, it experienced its first growth boom thanks to heavy trade with neighboring Perrysburg and Cincinnati due to its location on both banks of the Muskingun River - perfect for boat traffic that crossed both sides frequently during those days. By 1840, Maumee had more than 2,000 residents and was considered one of Ohio’s leading commercial centersthroughout much of Michigan." Maumee, Ohio (pronounced mah-muh-tee) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1835 by General David Dixon and named for Colonel John Maumee, an American Revolutionary War general who fought on the side of Great Britain. The first permanent settler in what is now Maumee was Captain Isaac Chauncey, who arrived in 1833 from Philadelphia. One hundred fifty years later, in 1935, General David Dixon established a town site here as part of his efforts to develop a new route between Detroit and Cleveland through central Ohio Valley. A year later he named it after himself – Maumee being one of several localonyms used during this early period. In 1836 Maumee became the territorial capital of Wayne County when that area was added to Michigan; it remained so until 1945 when Grand Rapids took over that role. In 1850 Springfield Township was organized within Lucas County; but due to its small size it did not become part of any larger municipality until 1870 when it became Clinton Township under the jurisdiction of Grand Rapids. In 1875–76 there were some disturbances near Mound Road and Water Street leading into downtown which resulted in two arrests and one injury; however no damage or injuries were reported as a result of these events On October 11, 1886, George Washington Carver gave a public lecture at Queen's Hall lasting three hours on "The Physical Aspects Of Agriculture." This event led to large crowds turning out to see him and gain knowledge about agricultural methods available at that time For many years afterwards Carver's lectures were given free OFFSITE at various colleges throughout America
