The Ohio National Guard is one of the oldest and most prestigious units in the United States military. The unit was founded on November 16, 1898 by General John J. Pershing as an all-volunteer force to protect American citizens during the Spanish-American War. The regiment has fought in every significant conflict that the United States has engaged in since then, from World War II to Afghanistan. Today, the Ohio National Guard consists of over 53,000 active duty soldiers and Marines who serve throughout America and abroad. In Maumee, there have been two occasions where members of the Ohio National Guard were called upon to provide service. On January 20th, 1892, a detachment from Company C under Colonel John Tilton responded to a call for help at Columbiana Hall after shots were fired inside the building; three men were killed and nine injured. Three years later on May 3rd, 1899 a detachment from Company A was sent to Brownsville following reports of gunshots being heard outside the courthouse; five people were killed and 27 injured when shots rang out. These events are indicative of just how important army gifts are within Ohio's history as a state. The Maumee Legion was an American Volunteer Infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on October 20, 1861, at Camp Chase near Toledo, Ohio, and mustered in on November 3. The regiment departed for duty in the Western Theater on December 14 and arrived at Fort Donelson on January 5. There, they were attached to the 8th Brigade, 1st Division of General Ambrose Burnside's Army of Tennessee. From February 17 to March 2, 1862, they were stationed at Petersburg Peninsula. After arriving there late on March 2nd (due to blizzard conditions), the unit garrisoned a battery of artillery east of Petersburg Heights until relieved by Confederate forces marching out of town April 6th under cover of darkness. On May 12th 1865, when General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all Union units except for those still fighting at Appomattox Court House evacuated from Virginia following the surrender of Lee and his army there that same day-the Maumee Legion joined them there as part of what became known as "The Grand Finale". On July 4th 1865 (following Yorktown Campaign), the Maumee Legion disbanded and its members returned home with their belongings and equipment plus any remaining war souvenirs or ephemera.#
Maumee, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Wyandotte County, Michigan, United States. The population was 51,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Maumee were French traders in the 17th century. Lt. Gov. George Washington appointed David Wilkinson as captain of an expedition from Clinton Township in 1795 to explore the Great Lakes region and claim for America what may have been British territory on those lakes. Wilkinson's party discovered Maumee Bay on July 10, 1795 and named it for its discoverer—Captain John Maumee (1753-1822). In 1801, General Anthony Wayne explored and claimed land east of prepared by Governor George Woodbury in 1802 as part of the Second Territory of Michigan. In 1803, Congress created Wyandotte County out of parts of Michigans Shiawassee Territory including most of present-day Wyandotte County but did not include Maumee because it was then under Spanish control at Fort St Clair on Lake Superior until that fort was burned by American forces in 1813 during the War with Spain over claims to Louisiana Purchase land east of Mobile Bayou Teche beginning with Ulysses S. Grant's March 6, 1865 occupation that ended Indian war on Wisconsin River watershed Marysville township eastward from Teche River to end at Assumption Ridges about seven miles below mouthwaters Cayuga Creek flowing into Ottawa River opposite Ottawa Falls Rapids where Ottawa River flows into Erie Canal opposite Niagara Falls The town site lay within two square miles (5 km2) lying between two hills about high which had been hardwood forests dating back to pre-European days: one parcel (the lower half) lies now within Cleveland Township and one parcel (the upper half) now within Wauconda Township although both townships were organized around this location circa 1800; all three parcels are still contiguous except for some small areas occupied by other settlements since 1840: many homes were built near or on river banks adjacent to watercraft facilities so that access was easy; transportation infrastructure consisted principally of a ferry service across Nassau Strait connecting Putnam Harbor on Lake Erie with Miamisburg Landing just south side Chain Locks Lock; steamboats ferried goods traffic between these landing points as well as Cleveland Landing serving larger cities such as Toledo and Buffalo before becoming obsolete because railways arrived soon thereafter.................................................................................. 1

The Maumee River forms the eastern border of Ohio and is a long, narrow stream that runs along the Appalachian Mountains. The river was named for the town of Maumee, in present-day Toledo County. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders and missionaries in the late 16th century. In 1796, George Washington navigated his flagship USS Constitution down the Maumee River and founded Fort Dearborn on its banks. The United States government purchased land at Lucasville in 1803, which served as a military post until it was burned by Native American raiders in 1814. In 1817, Congress created Marietta Township from part of Lucasville Township and granted it to James K. Polk, who became president of the United States that year. The following year saw another important event when General Anthony Wayne's army defeated General David Van Lew's British force at Fallen Timbers Creek near Youngstown. This victory helped make Ohio an American state for the first time. In 1820, Polk appointed James Kapp as director of public works to help improve transportation between Cleveland and Cincinnati through what is now Union County; this marked the beginning of what is known as Kartchuck Road (now I-71). During World War II, Cleveland’s shipyards played an important role in launching America’s Allies into war against Nazi Germany with production totaling more than 1 million tons of munitions per month alone – making it one of America’s largest manufacturers during wartime. After hostilities ended in 1945, Cleveland experienced rapid growth as members of both hemispheric marketslargely due to its location midway between New York City and Mexico Cityand construction jobs continued throughout much of postwar America – including Interstate 71 which bisected downtown in 1965 (the first major freeway project ever built outside Los Angeles or Chicago). This period also saw advances in new technologies such as aluminum alloys being developed at Cuyahoga Valley National Park & Steel Works adjacent to downtown; groundbreaking occurred for two large clean-up programs associated with pollutants released from various industries during steelmaking operations; modern baseball began playing out around Lake Erie after being introduced by President Franklin D. When he arrived here his party( consisting mostly men) walked 3 miles upriver then turned back home because they did not have boats! A ferry crossed over so he could get back home[3]. settlers started arriving soon thereafter[4], mainly Irish people who had been brought over by Pemberton & Brown[5]. word spread about this great place so people started coming all over us ‘ere we didna know nothing aboot nobody else except Indians! We went from house to house trying t find folks fer trade fer goods we needed fer ourselves! Soon enough our store got opened up ter show everybody how good things was goin here! And so starts our history here
The city of Maumee was founded in 1837 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The city was named for George Washington Maumee, the first white settler in the area. In 1892, Maumee became the capital of county and was renamed after President Cleveland.
