Air Force gift history in Maumee, Ohio began in the early 1940s when the United States Air Force decided to establish a branch within the military. The air force at that time was known as the Army Air Forces. On July 1, 1941, Congress passed an act establishing the USAF and providing for its organization and officers. It also authorized appropriations for fiscal year 1941 for new aircraft and equipment. In October of that year, the Eighth Air Force was activated in Maumee as part of General George C Marshall’s Fifth Air Force command structure. The purpose of Eighth Air Force was to provide fighter aviation support to strategic objectives by attacking ground targets with bombers and fighters. As Ninth Air Force became operational on November 15th 1942, it was assigned to Eighth AF under General Hap Arnold with responsibility for fighter activity over Germany (AFC Europe). On December 3rd 1942 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which established plans for invasion of Japan by United States forces should war break out between Japan and America. With Japanese forces retreating from mainland Japan towards Taiwan, American planners believed they could able to quickly overwhelming Japanese defenders without fighting across large bodies of water. This order called for construction of up to 30 airfields around Taiwan so American pilots could take off and land on enemy territory using their newly acquired aircraft carriers- something never before attempted on mainland China or any other theater during World War II! Work began immediately on behalf of Operation Decisive Wave at various naval yards throughout Taiwan including Long Beach Naval Station where P-38 Lightning fighters were built alongside Navy's Yorktown class battleships while Yokosuka Naval Base constructed massive airstrips complete with runways and hangars capable housing up to forty planes! These airstrips would become one of key strengths against Japanese bombers based in Okinawa prefecture; a region surrounded by mountains which made bombing difficult if not impossible! The first combat flights took place just after Christmas Eve 1942 when two P-38 Lightnings escorted by Liberators hit Chichi Shima airfield southeast of Tokyo; destroying six planes including one flown by Major Hiroshi Shimada who later served as a Test Pilot at MAAF headquarters during World War II! Lieutenant Commander John F Kennedy flew his third mission from Iwo Jima; damaging four J2F Zero's while strafing someHideki Tojo's home town Hiroshima!!! For all intents and purposes this became known as “The Day Of The Unexpected” as no Allied aircraft had ever beenatakaed into action against Japan prior thereto!! By January 1943 hostilities had shifted northward resulting in increased bomber activity over China with eight P-51 Mustangs sent over Lingyuan Refinery oil refinery east of Shanghai however these raids failed to achieve results due primarily to weather conditions!!!! By February 1943 both sides were making desperate attempts at finding a way through Guam Strait but no progress was made until March when Vice Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto ordered USS Enterprise (CVN 58) Task Group 77.5 (Operation Mojo) led by Rear Admiral Ernest King Jr., striking Rabaul Island southwest Pacific Ocean!!! King's goal was twofold: destroy critical fuel supplies being distributed among Japanese troops on Guadalcanal Island plus damage or capture three carrier groups totaling 38 warships!!!!! Carrier Group 7 comprised USS Lexington (CV9), USS Enterprise (CVN 58), USS Saratoga (CV62), USS Princeton (CV40) along with HMS Illustrious(L14)! All went according to plan until about 0425 hrs local time when Gloucester Shoals lightship appeared bearing bad news reports regarding troop concentrations ashore!!! Yamamoto orderedKing Back home immediately!! Battle continued meanwhile heavy gunfire could be heard coming from shoreline approximately 0630 hours local time !! At 0700 hours local time Yamato reported successful completion of mission!!! This event is generally considered as Pearl Harbor Attack because it resulted in major losses for Imperial Japanese forces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maumee was founded in 1795 by the Erie Canal Company, which built the canal to connect Lake Erie with the Ohio River. The town was named for General Anthony Wayne, who had been instrumental in developing the canal. Maumee became a major commercial and transportation center in Northwest Ohio until its decline during World War II. It regained some of its former importance after the war, but has since lost most of its population and economic significance. Today, Maumee is a small village located east of Toledo on State Route 22. The first European settlers in what is now Maumee were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1795. They erected a log cabin on the site that is still standing today. In 1802, Nathan Lyon laid out a township on land that he owned near present-day downtown Maumee. The following year, Jerome Barnes purchased Lyon's interest and laid out a town adjacent to Lyons' original township line. On July 1, 1807, Barnes renamed it Maumee after his home state of Michigan (then part of Canada). In 1824, John Stephenson donated land to form an addition to Maumee Township which became known as Stephensontownship northwest of modern day downtown MaumEEe In 1830 Daniel Webster donated land northeast of Stephensontownship to become part of present-day Ottawa Township In 1840 David Green bought twenty-one acres southeast of Ottawa Township from Nicholas Biddle for $1 per acre and named it Greenville after himself and his father-in-law Ethan Allen Greene (a Patriot general during the American Revolution). Greenville rapidly grew into one of the largest townships in Northwest Ohio due to its location along strategically important waterways such as the Erie Canal and Canalside Road/Route 9W between Toledo and Dayton In 1848 George Washington Woodward donated three hundred acres southwest of Greenville to form what is now Woodwardown Township . This donation allowed Woodwardto establish control over much valuable land around Toledo which would later be used for manufacturing purposes such as auto parts plants . After several years of growth under new leaderships including Cyrus Thomas Woodbury (the son-in-lawof John Stephenson), James Treadwell Wilson (the brother-in-lawof Cyrus Thomas Woodbury), Lewis Hallett Winnard (the uncleof James Treadwell Wilson), David Laughlin Copley (a wealthy local manufacturer) – among others – Miamie attained city status on December 12th1853 when commissioners appointed by Mayor Atherton announced that allvillages north thereof should be united into one municipality . On January 1st1854 Mayor Atherton issued an ordinance creatingMaumaEe City Hall with powers similar to those granted by Mayor Wesselsons ordinance granting cityhood unto Cincinnati just two years earlier
The first white settler in Maumee Township was John Fenton, who arrived in 1814. The township was organized on December 14, 1825, and named for General David Maumee. The first school in the township was built in 1827.
