The history of policing in Massillon, Ohio goes back to the early 1800s. At that time, the town was known as a trading post and police department was housed in a building on the square. The first permanent police officer was hired in 1814 and the department grew slowly but steadily. By 1828, it had its own jail and detachment of cavalry. In 1834, a new courthouse and jail were built; the old one was torn down in 1892. In 1865, Massillon became a village and the police department became part of the municipal government. On July 1, 1907, the city annexed neighboring town of Wickliffe into Massillon proper. In 1814, after Indian war Chief Tecumseh's forces destroyed Fort Pitt, Massillon renamed itself for General John Stark as part of an effort to curry favor with him. In 1824, Major James Wilkinson donated land to make way for a gristmill that would power Troy Township’s first newspaper. That mill became one of the largest mills in Ohio and played an important role in developing the town into what it is today: a major center for industry and commerce. By 1830, there were over 50 businesses operating in Massillon without any public services or schools; this led to its nickname “the city of factories” during this time period. Massillon experienced significant growth during World War II when many industries shifted their production from outside Cleveland due to wartime shortages elsewhere in America. The city played an important role in supplying food for military camps throughout Europe as well as American troops fighting abroad and their families back at home before and after hostilities ended. After 1945, massilonians regained much of their lost economic vitality thanks to various industrial renovations and expansions which continue even today - including new factories such as Rubbermaid (now Tyco) and Ford Motor Company plants located adjacent to downtown – making it one of Greater Cleveland’s most vibrant cities with more than $100 billion worth of business activity announced within its boundaries since 2000!
